Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield made cinematic history when the three actors united on the big screen for an epic Spider-Man reunion — and now, they’ve come together once again in their first joint interview to finally spill the beans about how it all happened.

Tobey and Andrew, who both played Spider-Man in their respective film franchises, joined Tom in the third installment of his Spider-Man film franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The two brought their versions of Spider-Man alongside Tom’s, bringing the three Spider-Mans together in an unprecedented reunion. The three kept things under wraps, feigning ignorance and issuing denials left and right prior to the movie’s premiere. Now, in a joint interview with Deadline, they are at last free to dish on their experience working together on No Way Home, and how it all came to be.

Tobey and Andrew first shared how they became part of the film, with Tobey stating:

“In that conversation [with producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal] the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies and what it meant, I think, to Amy and Kevin was apparent.

And to me, when artists or, you know, people who are steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them, that, I don’t know, I just wanted to join that. And I’m a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing, but yes, I was also going, ‘well, what are we going to do? And that was a bit mysterious.”

Andrew then told his story of how he got involved:

“I was just waiting to see if Tobey was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, ‘Well, I have no choice,’ you know? I follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. I’m a lemming for Tobey.

But that was sincerely a big part of it when I was approached about it, and again, it’s similar to what Tobey was saying. It was like, ‘Oh, the intention feels very pure here. It actually feels like a great creative idea and a great creative story.’”

He went on to speak highly of how incredible his and Tobey’s roles in the movie were written and how they were in service to Tom’s Spider-Man:

“It wasn’t like they were asking us to come and say hi and then leave again, but actually have our presence being in service to Tom. I love the destiny feeling of the multiverse expanding in this film.

And actually that without Tobey’s Peter and Andrew’s Peter being present for Tom’s Peter at this very moment, he may not become the Peter Parker that he’s supposed to become… I get chills thinking about it even now.”

Tom then revealed that while he was so thrilled to have both Tobey and Andrew on board, the idea of meeting the two men who previously took on the mantle of Peter Parker was “very daunting”:

“As soon as I met you guys in Atlanta, I realized that I had nothing to be nervous about… It was an amazing experience. From day one, it was a roller coaster that I didn’t want to get off. It was a lot of fun… It was so collaborative, it was so playful.

From [Andrew] cracking Tobey’s back to [Andrew] coming up with the idea of pointing at us, it was all stuff that we came up with on the day, and it was just a lot of fun to be able to play with three guys in Spider-Man suits. It was a strange experience but one that I won’t ever forget.”

Andrew also spoke about what an incredible experience it was and how filming together “exceeded my expectations”:

“It was just kind of a joyful few weeks that we all got to spend together… I think it’s a testament to these guys that it went the way it went, which was a brotherhood, which is beautiful.”

To which Tobey wholeheartedly concurred, saying:

“It was powerful for me to be working with Andrew and Tom, and powerful in a legitimately moving, emotional way… I was just grateful every day. Really, it was such a rich experience… the kind of sharing of something and the brotherhood of it. It was just so rich, emotional…

It was pretty wild to witness the immensity of all of this history coming together and being put into this standalone, worthwhile story… I was really touched emotionally, but I also thought it had such a sweet elegance to it. That was so amazing.”

Tom adorably revealed that he loved seeing the fan reactions to Andrew and Tobey’s appearance in the film:

“One of my favorite things to do at the minute is to go online and watch fans react to you guys coming in that one scene in particular.

I don’t think I could ever imagine it being so well received by everyone… It feels like we’ve been on some really weird dream. It feels really strange.”
