Demi Lovato is opening up about the deep, personal meaning of the angel tattoo on her back.

Back in December, tattoo artist Alessandro Capozzi posted a photo of the new ink he gave the “Anyone” songstress, sharing that they created the custom design to “represent a rebirth of the spirit.”

Now, Demi herself is sharing her explanation of the new ink.

Posting two images, one showing her getting inked and one showing the stunning final artwork, on Instagram, “I recently went dark on social media in preparation for my Grammy and Super Bowl performances but while I was off socials I got this incredibly meaningful tattoo done by @alessandro_capozzi,” Demi began her caption.

“Getting tatted by him was an experience I’ve never had before.. no idea what I was going to get done, I told him about my life and where I was at in that moment and we created a combination on images that best symbolized the spiritual awakening I was having,” she continued.

“Having a fallen angel being lifted by 3, pure, angelic doves (the Holy trinity) as her inner light is being guided by a higher consciousness, and the disintegration of her dark wings was representing the darkness I was shedding,” she explained, adding, “Alessandro – you are extremely talented and I can’t wait for more!! Thank you for this special experience.. the only bummer is I can’t physically see this amazing artwork because it’s on my back! Haha. Also shout out to @scooterbraun for introducing us! 🖤🕊💉 ps. I still can’t believe how life like this looks and it healed amazing as well 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼.”

Demi has so far been slaying 2020 – kicking off the year with her new music in almost two years, debuting the song with a powerful and emotional performance at the GRAMMYs, singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl LIV, and announcing a new talk show in the works titled Pillow Talk With Demi Lovato.

But before making her triumphant return to the GRAMMY stage, she wasn’t even sure she would ever perform again.

On Thursday (January 30), Demi went on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, where she revealed to host Andy Cohen that her July 2018 overdose left her with serious doubts if she would ever return to music.

“Yeah, absolutely [I thought I might not return to music],” Demi said. “It was a general [thought] though. We didn’t know what was going to happen. We didn’t know how healthy I would be when I left. It was a scary time in my life, for sure.”

“Anyone” was recorded just four days before her overdose happened. And Demi also opened up about what the song represented for her.

“That song, [“Anyone”], I knew that it represented that period in my life when everything hit the fan. I knew it represented everything I was going through, the vulnerability… I’ve never had a moment like this where I’ve sat down at a piano, or stood next to a piano, and sang my heart out. I thought, if I ever come back from this… I was still in the hospital. I didn’t know. If I ever come back from this… I want it to be at the GRAMMYs and I want it to be this song,” Demi said.

She also expressed her gratitude for all the support she’s gotten and shared that she hopes her song might be able to inspire hope for people going through difficult challenges.

“I’m just really, really grateful that the response has been so awesome. I think people are able to hear that song for what it is, which is a very emotional plea for anyone else listening,” she added. “I want to represent that for people, and showing them they can get through anything.”
