Andrew Garfield Talks Doom Scrolling and Having ‘Creeper Accounts’

For someone who has managed to stay largely off the grid, Andrew Garfield is surprisingly candid about his relationship with the internet.

The 42-year-old actor—who has famously avoided having any public-facing social media accounts—recently opened up about what life actually looks like behind the scenes. And despite his carefully curated absence from the online spotlight, he’s not as disconnected as some might assume.

In fact, he’s right there with the rest of us.

“I’m just as bad as everyone else,” Andrew shared in a recent interview with the Associated Press. “Because I’m a human, and they’ve somehow managed to tap into our human addictive responses. So no, I’m not immune to it.”

It’s a refreshingly honest admission, particularly from an actor whose career has often leaned toward introspection and intentionality. Garfield has built a reputation not just as a performer, but as someone deeply aware of the emotional and psychological landscapes he inhabits—both on and off screen.

That awareness extends to his digital habits.

“I don’t have social media,” Andrew added. “I have, like, creeper accounts in certain places. And I have to be very, very disciplined with myself.”

The phrase “creeper accounts” may sound tongue-in-cheek, but it speaks to a broader reality. Even those who opt out publicly often remain quietly plugged in, navigating the same algorithms, distractions, and dopamine loops as everyone else.

Garfield’s framing of it—discipline rather than denial—feels particularly telling. He’s not pretending immunity. He’s acknowledging the pull, and the effort it takes to resist it.

The actor’s low-key online presence has been something of an open secret for years. Back in a joint Vanity Fair interview, his We Live In Time co-star Florence Pugh playfully hinted at his digital habits.

“Well, you don’t have any public social network, but the ones that you do, that I do know of you using, you tweet. Not much, but you do do twits,” she revealed.

Garfield was quick to shut that down.

“I’ve never tweeted,” he clarified.

Pugh doubled down—sort of.

“Oh, I’m sorry — but you do look at twits a lot,” she added, prompting Garfield to respond, “You were right the first time — no social network!”

“Oh, so I shouldn’t have said that,” Florence said.
