AnnaLynne McCord is speaking out about the baffling poem that she shared in a video addressed to “Dear Mister President Vladimir Putin.”
As Russian troops advanced towards Ukraine, many took to social media to express their sentiments and decry the unprovoked attack on the European democracy.
A video shared by AnnaLynne captured the attention and perplexed the internet. In the video, the 90210 reboot star filmed a poem which was dedicated to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Her poem, which was posted on Twitter, began:
“I’m so sorry that I was not your mother. If I was your mother you would have been so loved. Held in the arms of joyous light. Never would this story’s plight, the world unfurled before our eyes. A pure demise. Of nation sitting peaceful under a night sky.”
The poem went on to say:
“If I was your mother, the world would have been warm. So much laughter and joy, nothing would harm. I can’t imagine the stain. The soul-stealing pain that the little boy, you must have seen and believed and the formulation of thought quickly taught that you lived in a cruel, unjust world. Is this why you now decide no one will get the best of you? Is this why you do not hide nor shy away from taking back the world? Was it because so early in life all that strife wracked your little body with fear?”
AnnaLynne declared further into the video, which was almost three minutes long:
“Oh, dear Mr. President Putin, if only I’d been your mother, perhaps the torture of unwrit youth would not within your heart imbue ascription to such fealty against that world that seemed so cruel.”
Her words truly were perplexing to many, and even earned the ire of people who called her out for her insensitive, tone-deaf sentiments.
A day after posting the video, AnnaLynne spoke out about her poem. On Buzzfeed, she defended what she said, stating:
“I know how I could have easily moved in the direction of becoming a dictator myself.
If certain circumstances of my life were different, were I a little less bent toward healing and more toward vindication, I could have been a darkly powerful person.”
She added that she feels for “children who grow into adults and become people who do historically horrifying things” because she herself understands “early life trauma.”
