The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved figures following the death of actor Anthony Head at age 72.

Head, best known to generations of fans for portraying Rupert Giles, Buffy’s trusted Watcher and mentor, died following complications from pneumonia, according to a statement shared by his family. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from former castmates who worked alongside him throughout the iconic supernatural drama’s seven-season run.

For many viewers, Giles served as the emotional center of Buffy the Vampire Slayer—a wise, compassionate father figure whose guidance helped shape Buffy Summers and the entire Scooby Gang. Behind the scenes, it appears Head played a similarly influential role for many of his co-stars.

Leading the tributes was Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred opposite Head as Buffy Summers. Sharing a collection of photos on Instagram, Gellar wrote:

“‘Tell Giles I figured it out and I’m ok.’ Well I don’t have it figured out and I’m not ok. But I know I’m the lucky one because I knew you. Thank you to Daisy and Emily who not only shared their dad with me, but with the world.”

The quote references one of the most emotional moments in the series finale, making her tribute particularly poignant for longtime fans.

David Boreanaz, who portrayed Angel throughout the franchise, also honored his former co-star.

“RIP. He was so kind and generous of a soul,” Boreanaz captioned.

Meanwhile, James Marsters shared a heartfelt reflection on Head’s impact both on and off set:

“There’s a hole in the World. Anthony Head has passed on from us. He was an unflaggingly kind and steady presence on the set of Buffy, and the best actor in the cast. He was the best of us. I was lucky to have known, and learned from him. He left the world a better place for his presence. Thank you Tony for all you gave.”

Eliza Dushku, who played Faith, kept her tribute brief but meaningful.

“Tony H, for every scene and timed shared, give thanks. Rest in love and peace, kind sir. A dear one.”

Charisma Carpenter reflected on the significance of Giles for fans around the world, writing:

“Tony brought life to a character who, for so many, was the father figure they needed but didn’t have at home. Fans far and wide are surely grieving, and for that, I am deeply sorry.”

One of the most personal tributes came from Emma Caulfield, who shared a photograph taken during a visit with Head in London more than a decade ago.

“This was taken on the London Underground in 2011. I went to visit my friend Tony on the set of The Iron Lady. We had lunch, hit up a record store, had dinner and drinks and laughed until our sides hurt. It was a perfect day. There were many of these moments with this amazing human who I was lucky enough to call my friend for 27 years. He was kind and wise and a guide in troubled times. You were so loved. Impossible to caption. You are so missed. rest in peace with your beautiful Sarah-Emma.”

Alyson Hannigan also shared an emotional message.

“This cut is so deep I fear it can never heal. Oh Tonal…I am so grateful to have had you in my life! I want to say a million wonderful things about you and yet I can’t seem to find the words that would do you justice. I love you so much and will miss you forever. RIP.”

Head’s daughters, Emily and Daisy, confirmed the news in a statement, saying:

“He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family. It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”

His death marks another heartbreaking loss for the extended Buffy family. Earlier this year, Nicholas Brendon, who portrayed Xander Harris, died at age 54. In 2025, Michelle Trachtenberg, beloved for her role as Dawn Summers, passed away at age 39.

For fans, Anthony Head’s legacy extends far beyond one role. Across film, television, and stage, he built a career defined by warmth, intelligence, and remarkable versatility. Yet for millions, he will forever be remembered as Giles—the steadfast mentor who helped save the world, one apocalypse at a time.
