Aubrey Plaza is entering a new chapter—one that’s as unexpected as it is quietly powerful.

The “Parks and Recreation” alum is reportedly pregnant and expecting her first child with actor Chris Abbott. While the pair have largely kept their personal lives under wraps, a representative for Plaza confirmed the news to People, signaling a rare glimpse into the actor’s private world. USA TODAY has reached out to both Plaza and Abbott’s teams for further comment.

The news arrives without a formal public relationship confirmation from either actor, making the announcement feel all the more intimate—and in line with Plaza’s famously low-key approach to fame. Despite working together on multiple projects, including the off-Broadway revival of “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” and the 2020 psychological drama “Black Bear,” the two have never publicly defined their relationship.

Professionally, their creative chemistry has long been evident. “Black Bear,” which premiered at Sundance, showcased both actors at their most raw and unpredictable, earning critical acclaim for its layered storytelling and performances. Abbott, widely recognized for his role as Charlie Dattolo on HBO’s “Girls,” has since continued building a strong stage presence, most recently appearing in the Broadway revival of “Death of a Salesman.”

Plaza, meanwhile, has maintained a steady presence across film, television, and fashion. Her most recent public outing took place during Paris Fashion Week in March, where her sartorial choices sparked quiet speculation. The actor appeared in a series of loose-fitting ensembles, including a red collared sweatshirt paired with a white miniskirt at the Lacoste show, as well as an oversized black leather jacket at Loewe’s presentation—looks that now read differently in light of the news.

The timing of the announcement adds another layer of poignancy. It comes just over a year after the death of Plaza’s husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, who passed away in January 2025 at the age of 47. According to an investigative summary report from the medical examiner previously obtained by USA TODAY, the couple had been separated for four months at the time of his death.

In the months following the tragedy, Plaza offered a rare and candid reflection on grief during an appearance on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast. “Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you,” Plaza said in August. “I’m here, and I’m functioning, and I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I’m OK, but it’s a daily struggle, obviously.”

That sense of resilience now underscores this new phase in her life. While Plaza has long built a career on subverting expectations—balancing deadpan humor with emotional depth—this moment feels like a quiet recalibration. There are no grand announcements, no curated reveals—just a simple confirmation and a shift forward.

As always, Plaza is doing things on her own terms.

And now, as she prepares for motherhood, it’s clear she’s stepping into yet another role—one that, much like the rest of her career, she’s choosing to navigate with intention, privacy, and a sense of grounded authenticity.
