Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night in California after authorities say she was stopped on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The 44-year-old pop icon was reportedly taken into custody on March 4 in Ventura County after officers responded to reports of a vehicle driving erratically on a local highway. According to multiple reports, the incident began when law enforcement received a 911 call describing a black sedan weaving through traffic at high speed.

The car was later identified as a 2026 black BMW convertible, allegedly being driven by Spears.

According to dispatch recordings obtained by media outlets, an officer described the situation as it unfolded: “A black sedan, erratic braking, swerving and driving with no tail light. Can we send all units down towards this area please.”

Authorities say the pursuit lasted roughly an hour, beginning around 8:13 p.m. before the vehicle eventually pulled over shortly after 9 p.m. Once the car stopped, officers confirmed the driver had exited the vehicle.

“Driver is out the vehicle,” dispatch reportedly stated during the stop.

The California Highway Patrol later confirmed that Spears was detained around 9:30 p.m. local time and showed signs of possible impairment during the interaction. Officers requested a Drug Recognition Expert, a specialist trained to evaluate whether a driver may be impaired by drugs or other substances.

According to reports, Spears agreed to participate in sobriety testing after being stopped.

TMZ later reported that investigators allegedly discovered an unknown substance inside the vehicle, though authorities have not publicly confirmed details about what the substance may have been.

Spears was booked at 3:02 a.m., according to Ventura County Sheriff’s records cited by Page Six, and was later released from custody at 6:07 a.m. the same morning.

She is expected to appear in court on May 4 in connection with the incident.

Following the news, Spears’ representative issued a statement addressing the situation and acknowledging the seriousness of the arrest.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

The statement continued, “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

Spears shares two sons — Sean Preston Federline, 20, and Jayden James Federline, 19.

The arrest comes during a period that has already seen Spears navigating significant public scrutiny following the end of her conservatorship in 2021 and a series of personal developments in the years since.

For now, the focus appears to be on what happens next — both legally and personally.

As the case moves forward, Spears’ representatives say the singer plans to comply with legal proceedings while working with family and loved ones on the support she needs moving forward.
