Comedy veteran Chelsea Handler is setting the record straight following public claims made by Canadian stand-up comedian Salma Hindy regarding her abrupt departure from Handler’s ongoing national tour. The dispute spilled into the public sphere this week after Hindy alleged on social media that her supporting dates were revoked following her decision to post pro-Palestinian commentary, claiming Handler’s team sought to remove her over political differences.
Directly countering the allegations in the comment section of Hindy’s post, Handler firmly denied terminating the opening act:
“Ah, that’s actually not what happened. You quit opening for me, and I have the emails from your agents. Your agent is full of it. I would never fire someone for disagreeing with me politically on this issue.”
Handler added in a secondary response:
“And I never fired her. Period. Not on this issue.”
To corroborate her account, Handler shared timestamps of text exchanges and agent correspondence. In one message provided by Handler, Hindy appeared to initiate her own exit from the remaining dates, writing:
“Chelsea, something has now come up and I won’t be able to do the remaining four shows anymore [sad face]. Wanted you to hear it from me. Thank you for everything. It’s been such an experience, and you’re right it would’ve been wonderful stage time [heart].”
Handler further published historical email records confirming she had covered Hindy’s travel expenses and scheduling adjustments during past tour legs without incident.
Following Handler’s public response, Hindy posted an update to her Instagram Stories stating that Handler’s legal counsel had contacted her regarding potential libel claims, prompting Hindy to seek pro bono legal advice regarding First Amendment protection and defamation law. Handler’s team maintains that the tour roster change was strictly a voluntary resignation by the opener.
