Girls creator and auteur Lena Dunham has officially embraced motherhood. The 40-year-old writer, director, and actress, alongside her husband, musician Luis Felber, 40, have welcomed their first child together—a daughter born via surrogate.Dunham chronicled the emotional, physical, and psychological nuances of her path to parenthood in a personal essay published by Vogue.
Dunham’s fertility journey has been widely documented over the past decade. At age 31, after nearly two decades of severe pain and complications from advanced endometriosis, she underwent a total hysterectomy. Having previously grieved the loss of carrying a pregnancy herself, Dunham and Felber—who tied the knot in September 2021 following a swift romance—eventually turned to surrogacy to build their family.
In her Vogue piece, Dunham reflected vividly on the surreal, awe-inspiring moment her daughter entered the world, 13 days after her official due date:
“I saw her face, gasping just as she did. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly. ‘Hello,’ I said. ‘I’m your mama. You … you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.’”
Dunham described herself as feeling “bashful and dizzy with joy” upon holding her daughter, while reflecting candidly on the deep bond formed with their gestational surrogate. Admitting she initially wondered if she might feel envy toward the woman carrying her child, Dunham noted that those anxieties dissolved into profound gratitude upon meeting her, knowing her baby was “tucked into someone who radiated such safety.”
The milestone caps off a landmark year for Dunham, who continues to balance her growing domestic life with an active creative slate, including her upcoming Netflix romantic comedy Good Sex and the television drama adaptation of The Elissas.
