Doja Cat is speaking with a level of honesty that feels both raw and intentional — and it’s shifting the conversation around her in a meaningful way.
In a recent TikTok, the 30-year-old artist opened up about her mental health, revealing that she has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The moment came as she reflected on fellow artist Chappell Roan’s recent viral interaction with paparazzi in Paris — but quickly became something more personal.
Rather than simply commenting on the situation, Doja used it as a jumping-off point to share her own experience navigating emotional intensity, self-perception, and the pressure to maintain a certain image in public.
“I’m now struggling with BPD,” she revealed. “I don’t know how long I’ve been. I mean, probably forever. It’s an agonizing condition.”
It’s a striking admission — not just because of its vulnerability, but because of how matter-of-factly she delivers it. There’s no attempt to soften the reality of it, no effort to reframe it as something easily managed. Instead, Doja describes it as something deeply felt and long-standing.
Borderline Personality Disorder, as defined by the Mayo Clinic, is a mental health condition that affects how individuals view themselves and others. It often involves intense emotional experiences, unstable relationships, impulsivity, and a fluctuating sense of identity. For many, it can make everyday interactions feel heightened and unpredictable.
Doja’s openness also extended to how she’s coped over time — particularly the ways she’s masked her internal experiences.
She shared that she often felt the need to “pretend to be happy,” a strategy that, while effective on the surface, came at a cost. Over time, maintaining that version of herself became unsustainable.
She noted that she’s been in therapy “for years,” but also acknowledged the long road ahead, saying her BPD treatment could take up to eight years. It’s a reminder that mental health isn’t a quick fix — it’s an ongoing process, one that requires time, consistency, and patience.
Interestingly, it was Chappell Roan’s recent moment in Paris that helped spark this level of reflection.
Chappell, 28, made headlines after confronting paparazzi who she said were ignoring her personal boundaries during Fashion Week. The interaction resonated widely online, with many praising her for asserting herself so directly.
Doja made it clear she wasn’t projecting her own diagnosis onto Chappell, but she was inspired by the way the “Pink Pony Club” singer handled the situation.
“I love that she can be uncomfortable, comfortably, in front of people, and protect herself and be honest,” Doja said of Chappell. “I had to learn how to be honest. I had to learn how to be honest with myself. I lied to myself for years, for most of my life…. I love that she can do that without hurting people. She hasn’t hurt one person by being herself.”
