Donald Glover, the multi-talented actor, writer, and musician known to millions as Childish Gambino, opened up about a deeply personal health scare over the weekend during his first full performance in more than a year at the Camp Flog Naw Festival. The 42-year-old revealed that he suffered a stroke last year, a revelation that stunned fans who have followed his ever-evolving career.

“You guys voted for a ‘Where have I been?’ monologue,” Glover told the crowd. What followed was a candid recounting of a medical emergency that could have drastically altered his life and career.

“Okay, so I was doing this world tour. It’s having lots of fun, really loving seeing you guys out there, and I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well,” he said, describing the terrifying moment when he realized something was seriously wrong.

Glover continued, “So when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like ‘you had a stroke,’ and the first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am, still copying Jamie Foxx.’ That’s really like the second thing. The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’” His honesty about the emotional toll of the diagnosis highlighted just how intertwined his art and personal life are.

Adding further detail, he reflected, “But I’ve broken my foot. I always promised Ireland I’m gonna be there, and I still haven’t been. And they found a hole in my heart, so I had this surgery, but then I had to have another surgery.” The layered nature of his health struggles, from cardiac issues to recovery hurdles, paints a picture of someone grappling with the fragility of life while maintaining a career that demands physical and mental stamina.

“You know that they say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You got one life, guys. The life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing,” Glover said. His reflections were deeply human, emphasizing gratitude, presence, and the perspective gained from a near-tragic experience.

The rapper-actor also shared a lighthearted but profound observation on life’s fleeting pleasures: “I love seeing and performing for you guys. As my wife says, what I love, she’s like, ‘If this life is a flavor, as soon as I’m done, give me another scoop.’ You should be living your life how you want, it can only get better if we have to do this again. It can only get better.”

For context, Glover had scheduled 59 shows during his world tour but canceled 41 of them last September after completing 18 performances. Overseas shows were also canceled later in November. Despite these setbacks, his message was one of resilience, perspective, and appreciation for fans who have supported him through highs and lows.
