Jessica Simpson is back — and this time, she’s making music entirely on her own terms.

The 45-year-old singer and fashion designer has officially returned to the studio after nearly two decades away, releasing two new EPs this year: Nashville Canyon Parts One and Two. The records mark her first original material since her 2008 album Do You Know — and for Jessica, it’s been nothing short of transformative.

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Jessica reflected on her creative rebirth. “They are genreless because I think not having a label, it’s just been the most empowering thing ’cause I can really just listen to and do what I want to do,” she explained. “And for the first time ever in music, I just got to be vulnerable.”

She continued, “[When] I was signed to a record label, I had work to do, and it was just a job. And this time it was the spirit. I allowed the spirt to move through me… I just felt as if I was reborn and I was going through heartbreak, I was going through an incredible journey of trying to discover self love and also compassion, and just trying to remain vulnerable, but find strength through it. That’s really what Nashville Canyon ended up being for me.”

Jessica also admitted she wasn’t sure she could make music again. “I hadn’t put music in so long. I didn’t even know if I could do it,” she said.

But she did — and fans are thrilled. Even more exciting? She revealed she’s been talking with her sister Ashlee about collaborating. “Yes, of course. Ash and I were just talking on the phone two days ago about wanting to do something, and wanting our kids to be involved as well,” Jessica said. “‘Cause all of our kids are great, they’re all musically [inclined].”

She proudly added that her youngest, Birdie, 6, “can belt her brains out. She has got the power,” while Maxwell, 13, and Ace, 12, both have perfect pitch.

With her voice stronger — and freer — than ever, Jessica’s comeback proves it’s never too late to start singing again.
