Louis Tomlinson is opening up about something deeply personal — the heartbreaking loss of his longtime friend and former bandmate, Liam Payne.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone U.K., the 33-year-old singer reflected on how the tragedy has shaped him, especially as One Direction celebrated their 15th anniversary — the first without Liam, who passed away on October 16, 2024.

“It was really uncomfortable, actually, the 15th anniversary, because the [collective] feeling to celebrate is as important, if not more important than ever, on behalf of Liam,” Louis shared.

The milestone, which should’ve been filled with nostalgia and pride, brought up painful memories for the “Silver Tongue” singer. “You know, there’s still a level in my head [where it feels] unjust and frustrating that he’s not with us anymore. So, it just brought up those feelings, although I’m still living with them anyway.”

Louis has always been known for his grounded, honest nature, and in this moment, he’s no different. Losing Liam, he admitted, has been “really, really, impossibly difficult” — a reminder that fame and success don’t shield you from the human side of grief.

In the conversation, Louis also took a moment to honor his friend and what he meant to the band’s dynamic. “We were all just so amateur, but he was already where he needed to be by the time he did his first [X Factor] audition,” Louis said. “None of us would have admitted it at the time, because you have a lot of pride as a young lad, but we all looked up to him like that.”

Louis went on to describe Liam as “the safest pair of hands” in One Direction — the kind of steady presence that helped shape the group during its whirlwind rise to fame.
