Meghan Trainor is getting candid about the health journey that led to her recent weight loss — and the mix of praise and criticism that followed. Earlier this year, the 31-year-old Grammy winner revealed she’d begun using the GLP-1 medication Mounjaro after giving birth to her second child with husband Daryl Sabara. But now, Meghan says the story behind her weight loss goes deeper than medication alone.

In a new conversation with Los Angeles’ 104.3 MYfm, Meghan revealed that the wakeup call came during her pregnancy, when she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The diagnosis forced her to take a hard look at her long-term health and what she needed to do to feel strong enough for both motherhood and touring.

“It started with when I was pregnant and I had gestational diabetes,” Meghan shared. “I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to learn about health and fitness if I want to tour forever. I’ve got to be at my strongest if I want to lift up my kids from their crib and not pull out my back.’”

Meghan shares two sons — Riley, 4, and Barry, 2 — with her husband, who many still adore for his childhood role in Spy Kids. She says that becoming a mom of two shifted her priorities significantly.

Alongside the medication, Meghan has been working closely with a dietician and trainer while making larger lifestyle changes. She’s lost 60 pounds to date — but she says the transformation wasn’t about hitting a number. It was about feeling capable in her own body again.

“I just want to feel good because this job is hard to do if you don’t feel good,” she explained, noting she’s now “obsessed” with wellness and routinely monitors her hormone levels and gut health.

But with transformation comes scrutiny, and Meghan has found herself unexpectedly navigating waves of backlash for her smaller frame.

“I got a lot of hate for being thinner,” she admitted, adding that the backlash left her “rattled.”

“It’s weird—I’m finally so proud of myself and starting to love myself, and I’ve never gotten more hate,” she said. “I was confused, lost, really sad and heartbroken that I took care of myself but everyone’s angry.”

A portion of the criticism has come from fans who associate Meghan’s identity with her breakout hit “All About That Bass,” which championed body positivity and self-love.

“Everyone was like, ‘Why are you thin now? You’re ‘All About the Bass’ girl.’ I was 19 when I came out with that song and I’ve been on a fitness journey since,” she explained.

Still, she acknowledges that online negativity has affected her more than she expected. Meghan says she’s been leaning heavily on her support system — including her therapist — to stay grounded.

“My therapist is like, ‘You give these strangers so much power,’” she shared, recalling a moment she cried in bed over a single cruel comment about an outfit she wore. “I hate it when she says that because I was like, ‘Ew! I don’t want to give strangers power. I want to have my own power and not care.’”

Despite the noise, Meghan is embracing the healthier chapter she’s worked hard to build. Motherhood, music, and wellness continue to shape her priorities — and she’s learning, one step at a time, that self-growth often means tuning out the voices that don’t serve you.
