Muni Long Shades Mariah Carey With Impersonator Video

Muni Long has stepped straight into the pop-culture spotlight this week — and not for a new musical milestone. Instead, the “Delulu” hitmaker is catching heat after posting a skit that fans say was a not-so-subtle jab at none other than Mariah Carey.

The video, which Muni shared on Instagram to promote her upcoming single, features a Mariah Carey impersonator auditioning for her. In the clip, the faux-Mariah performs the song, then confidently advises Muni that she should sing it that way instead. Once the impersonator exits the room, Muni coolly stamps “delulu” across Mariah’s headshot. The skit ends with Muni staring directly into the camera and saying, “I just don’t like when other people sing my songs.”

Naturally, the internet had questions — and opinions — so let’s rewind and fill in the gaps.

The tension supposedly began back in March at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, where Muni delivered a surprise cover of Mariah’s iconic “We Belong Together” as a tribute to the music legend. While plenty of viewers praised the performance, social media quickly lit up with clips showing Mariah giving what looked like some onstage side-eye. Fans interpreted the reaction as disapproval.

Months later, when GQ asked Mariah about the tribute, things got even more tangled. Mariah appeared genuinely unaware the performance had ever happened, and she assumed the interviewer was referring to a recorded version — one that doesn’t actually exist.

“I didn’t even hear the cover. I didn’t know it happened. No one told me,” Mariah said. “I love Muni Long! I just didn’t know that she had done ‘We Belong Together’ [as a cover] ‘cause her song was so similar to ‘We Belong Together.’ I had no idea that she did ‘We Belong Together.’”

She continued, “Well, I’m very honored and flattered that she did it. I love Muni Long, she’s a great person, umm, but I just don’t like people doing my songs. [Laughs]”

That last line — delivered with a laugh but still pointed — seemed to be the catalyst for Muni’s new video. Fans were quick to connect the dots and even quicker to jump into the comments section with mixed reactions.

“Oh you trying it! Good luck girl. Mimi is a shade assassin ask J.Lo. Wow,” one user wrote. Another said, “Good luck on whatever it is you’re trying to achieve…”

Some called the skit messy, others found it funny, and a few argued that the whole situation was just a miscommunication blown out of proportion. But regardless of intention, the internet loves drama, and the moment the impersonator appeared in that doorway, the fanbase knew they were in for a ride.

Mariah hasn’t responded to the video — and chances are she won’t — but the saga continues to evolve as fans debate whether Muni crossed a line or is simply leaning into the theatrics of a well-timed promotional moment.
