After thirty-two years of gracing television screens in scrubs and stethoscopes, Noah Wyle has officially taken the ultimate pop-culture crown: People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2026. The 55-year-old actor—who first captured hearts in 1994 as wide-eyed medical student Dr. John Carter on NBC’s landmark drama ER—received the title during a banner career year that sees him back at the peak of peak TV.

Reacting to the cover reveal in his interview with the publication, Wyle admitted the news caught him completely off guard:

“I thought that sounded like a prank — just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me,” Wyle said with a laugh.

He leaned into the humor of the situation, anticipating plenty of friendly teasing from his inner circle:

“I hope this changes everything. I hope it’s just wine and roses, milk and honey from here on out. [Laughs] No, I don’t, but I am going to take a lot of ribbing from friends and family for sure.”

Wyle’s original run on ER alongside George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfield, and Julianna Margulies earned him five Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nods. The camaraderie from those early days clearly endures:at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards earlier this year, Clooney playfully lobbied for his former co-star, joking that the outlet should launch a “sexiest man still alive” issue before adding, “I would nominate Noah Wyle as the first guy… When I grow up, I want to be Noah Wyle.”

Sixteen years after ER concluded in 2009, Wyle returned to the high-stakes world of emergency medicine as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Pitt. The role has sparked a massive career resurgence, earning Wyle back-to-back Emmy Awards for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 2025 and 2026, as well as the 2026 Golden Globe for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series. With Season 3 set to premiere in January 2027, Wyle’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

Marking its 41st anniversary since Mel Gibson launched the feature in 1985, People’s Sexiest Man Alive title passes to Wyle from Wicked star Jonathan Bailey, who held the honors for 2025 as the first openly gay recipient. Wyle now joins an elite fraternity of past honorees that includes Patrick Dempsey, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Michael B. Jordan, John Legend, and Idris Elba—proving that true leading-man appeal only deepens with time.
