Production on Amazon MGM Studios’ highly anticipated Tomb Raider series has hit an unexpected pause, following an on-set injury involving its lead, Sophie Turner.
The Game of Thrones alum, who steps into the iconic role of Lara Croft, reportedly sustained what the studio has described as a minor injury during filming. While specific details remain under wraps, the decision was made to halt production temporarily as a precautionary measure.
“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible,” Amazon MGM Studios shared in a statement.
The pause comes at a critical moment for the project, which has been steadily building momentum since filming began earlier this year. The series, helmed by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, marks a major reimagining of the Tomb Raider franchise for television, with Turner leading a cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and an ensemble of established and emerging talent.
Turner’s casting as Lara Croft has been closely watched, not only because of the character’s legacy but also because of the expectations attached to rebooting such a globally recognized property. Early set photos and first-look images suggested a physically demanding production, with Turner performing in high-intensity action sequences across varied locations.
Just weeks before news of the injury surfaced, additional behind-the-scenes images showed the actress filming an elaborate stunt sequence in England—fueling anticipation for a series that appears to be leaning heavily into the franchise’s action roots.
Beyond the immediate pause, the project remains one of Amazon MGM’s most high-profile upcoming releases. Waller-Bridge serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner, bringing her distinctive storytelling voice to the franchise. She’s joined by Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and executive producer, signaling a collaborative approach to balancing character-driven storytelling with blockbuster-scale action.
The supporting cast—featuring names like Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, and Celia Imrie—adds further depth to the series, suggesting a narrative that extends beyond Lara Croft’s solo journey.
While the delay is unlikely to significantly derail the project, it does highlight the physical demands placed on actors in action-driven roles, particularly in a franchise known for its high-stakes stunts and rigorous shooting conditions.
For now, production remains on hold as Turner recovers. The expectation is that filming will resume once she is cleared to return, though no official timeline has been announced.
