Taylor Swift is once again at the center of a legal dispute—this time tied to the title of her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl.
A Las Vegas-based performer, Maren Wade, has filed a lawsuit against the global superstar, alleging trademark infringement, false designation, and unfair competition. The complaint, filed Monday (March 30), also names UMG Recordings as a co-defendant.
At the heart of the case is Wade’s long-running column, Confessions of a Showgirl, which she says she began writing for Las Vegas Weekly in 2014. According to the filing, Wade claims she has spent over a decade cultivating a brand identity tied to the “showgirl” concept—one she believes is now being overshadowed by Swift’s album rollout.
“A solo performer who spent twelve years building a brand shouldn’t have to watch it disappear because someone bigger came along,” Wade’s attorney, Jaymie Parkinnen, said.
The lawsuit seeks to block Swift from continuing to use the album title The Life of a Showgirl, in addition to requesting monetary damages. Notably, the filing also references the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s reported refusal to register Swift’s trademark, allegedly due to the phrasing “of a Showgirl.”
As the case gains traction, fans have begun dissecting Wade’s digital footprint. Some have pointed out that she has used Swift’s music in social media posts, along with hashtags like “#thelifeofashowgirl,” “#TS12,” “#taylorswift,” and “#swifties”—both before and after Swift’s album release. Whether those details will play a role in the legal proceedings remains to be seen, but they’ve certainly added another layer to an already complex situation.
Swift, who is no stranger to intellectual property disputes, has not publicly responded to the lawsuit at this time.
For now, the case raises familiar questions about ownership, branding, and the blurred lines between inspiration and infringement—especially in an era where cultural concepts like “showgirl” exist both as historical archetypes and modern artistic identity.
As proceedings unfold, all eyes will be on how this dispute develops—and whether it impacts one of the most talked-about album eras of Swift’s career.
