Kim Kardashian knows how to make an entrance – and did just that at the Met Gala on Monday (September 13), arriving at the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in haute couture Balenciaga.

And she definitely made an impression with her stark black ensemble that hid her entire identity – a black catsuit covered her entire body and a blacked-out face covering covered her entire head – from view. The custom look also tunic-length T-shirt, bodysuit, elbow-length gloves and “Pantaleggings” with built-in high heels. The only opening in her outfit was on top of her head – for her long, sleek, floor-length ponytail.

As if that wasn’t enough to have everyone buzzing, joining her on the steps was a mystery man in a similar identity-obscuring outfit, whom she had on her arm throughout the evening.

At first, there was a lot of speculation about the mystery man’s identity – some thought it was her estranged husband, Kanye West, who came to join her for the evening. The rapper has been donning a similar black-out face covering in recent months – including his appearance at the Balenciaga show in July and his Donda album listening events.

Kim’s Met Gala date, however, was definitely not Kanye, but rather Balenciaga’s Creative Director Demna Gvasalia!

It’s not uncommon for designers to accompany Met Gala guests at the event, but that doesn’t mean Kanye’s influence couldn’t be felt.

The blackout face covering definitely had “new-era Kanye” written all over it, and according to sources, the rapper was the one who introduced Kim to Demna.

“It was him who introduced Kim to Demna and was instrumental in the newly formed relationship between her and Balenciaga,” a source told E! News. “This look on Kim is like a new subculture and fashion statement. No logo, no face, but everyone knows it’s her.”

This year’s Met Gala theme is “In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion” and Kim also went on Instagram give an explanation of just how her custom look fit into the theme.

“What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!” she captioned an Instagram post.
