The fans have spoken – and the winners of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards have been crowned.
The 2020 MTV VMAs happened on Sunday (August 30) in New York City, bringing dynamic performances from our fave stars across several outdoor stages across the city – it was originally slated to be held at the Barclays Center, but they’ve since altered their plans due to the coronavirus pandemic.
From The Weeknd’s explosive opening number followed by host Keke Palmer’s poignant speech, to BTS’ VMAs debut and Lady Gaga’s show-stopping return to the VMA stage (at one point, sharing the stage with Ariana Grande), it was a memorable evening also filled with relevant messages on safety concerns, social justice and multiple heartfelt tributes to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman following his recent untimely passing.
Miley Cyrus had fans flashing back to her iconic “Wrecking Ball” music video when she jumped on a giant swinging disco ball for her performance of “Midnight Sky.” CNCO also brought nostalgia feels with a nod to 90s boybands Backstreet Boys and *NSync best-known moves incorporated into their choreography for “Beso.” And Doja Cat hilariously spoofed herself by playing a news anchor…who’s never heard of Doja Cat.
The Black Eyed Peas closed out the awards show with a medley of “Vida Loca” from their latest album, Translation, and the classic hit “I Gotta Feeling” – and introduced more fans to their newest member, J. Rey Soul, who’s taken on female vocals following Fergie’s departure from the band in 2017.
The 2020 MTV VMA’s iconic Moon Person trophy have also found new homes with the winners below:
