Even Camila Cabello gets the first date jitters.
While Cinderella star and boyfriend Shawn Mendes have been together for two years now, Camila still recalls being “so nervous” about going on their first official date – so much so that she needed a little liquid courage and even had to sing out some of the nerves.
“I swear to god, before Shawn and I’s first date, I was so nervous I took two tequila shots and sang ‘Defying Gravity,'” Camila shared during her appearance on James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment with her Cinderella co-stars Idina Menzel and Billy Porter.
Even though Camila and Shawn have been friends for years – and that they’ve been talking for weeks before striking up a romance – the 24-year-old performer admitted she felt a lot of pressure.
“There’s just a lot of stakes before the first time. I’m like, ‘Oh my god, do I kiss him when I see him?’ I don’t know,” she recalled.
“We were friends but we weren’t together,” she noted, recounting, “He’s about to come over and I’m so nervous I just can’t take it. My dad is there and I’m like, ‘Pour me two tequila shots, just do it.’ And I just sang ‘Defying Gravity.'”
Needless to say, it appears everything obviously worked out well for them – the couple is more loved up than ever. Camila also joked about the adorably sweet way Shawn supported her in her acting debut.
“We did run lines together for a brief period,” she shared, adding, “Shawn was self-conscious running the lines with me and he wasn’t even in the movie.”
“He’s probably more of the Cinderella in our relationship than I am,” she joked.
Aside from running lines with her, Camila has also previously revealed how Shawn surprised her onset.
“He surprised me the week of the ball and he saw me do one of the scenes,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “So he was there for the whole beginning of it, and was so supportive. I’m lucky I have some awesome people in my life.”
Cinderella found her happily ever after with her Prince Charming onscreen, and it looks like Camila is living her very own fairy tale IRL as well.
“He’s my guy,” she gushed about Shawn. “I love that guy.”
