Mark your calendars: May 4, 2026.

The Met Gala — fashion’s most theatrical, most photographed, most dissected night — has officially revealed its dress code and leadership lineup. And this year, the message is clear: fashion isn’t asking for validation. It’s claiming its place.

The 2026 dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” aligns with the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, Costume Art, which explores “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection.” Translation? This is a year for interpretation, experimentation, and unapologetic creativity.

Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met’s Costume Institute, made the intention explicit.

“Hopefully, it will put an end to the rather obsolete ‘Is Fashion Art?’ debate once and for all,” he shared.

That single sentence has already sparked anticipation across the industry. The phrase “Fashion Is Art” suggests fewer gimmicks and more concept. Think sculptural silhouettes, painterly textures, archival nods, and pieces that feel museum-worthy — because, technically, they are.

As always, Anna Wintour returns as co-chair. A Met Gala without Wintour at the helm would be like the Oscars without a red carpet. She’s shaped the event into the global cultural force it is today.

Joining her this year? Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams.

Beyoncé’s inclusion is especially buzzworthy. Though she’s attended the Gala seven times, she hasn’t appeared in a decade. Her return as co-chair feels strategic — and potentially historic. When Beyoncé steps onto the Met steps, it isn’t just fashion. It’s a moment.

Nicole Kidman brings prestige and red carpet fluency, having attended consistently from 2023 through 2025, with earlier appearances including 2016. Venus Williams, a longtime Met presence, bridges sport and style effortlessly, having attended in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025.

Behind the scenes, Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz will co-chair the Host Committee — a distinct role focused on fundraising and institutional support for the Costume Institute.

The Host Committee lineup reads like a cultural cross-section: Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Alex Consani, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Paloma Elsesser, LISA, Chloe Malle, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor, Lauren Wasser, Anna Weyant, A’ja Wilson, and Yseult. Newly added members include Adut Akech, Angela Bassett, Sinéad Burke, Rebecca Hall, Aimee Mullins, Tschabalala Self, Amy Sherald, and Chase Sui Wonders.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos will serve as honorary chairs.

With this theme, attendees are expected to push boundaries — but with intention. The Met Gala has oscillated between spectacle and scholarship in recent years. “Fashion Is Art” suggests 2026 may lean firmly into legacy.
