Miss J Alexander built a career on posture, poise, and presence. The man who once commanded the runway with a single glance is now commanding something even more powerful: resilience.
The former America’s Next Top Model judge has revealed that he suffered a devastating stroke in December 2022 — one that left him hospitalized for over a year and temporarily unable to walk or speak. Now 67, Miss J is telling his story publicly for the first time in Netflix’s Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model.
And while his body may have slowed, his spirit absolutely has not.
“I miss being the queen of the runway, the queen of the catwalk, of course. I’m the person who taught models how to walk. I taught models how to walk, and now I can’t walk,” he said. “Not yet. I’m determined to walk. I’m sure you’re going to see me again. I’m sure. It’s not over for me yet.”
Miss J revealed that he spent five weeks in a coma following the stroke. When he regained consciousness, the reality was disorienting.
“I woke up, I didn’t know where I was, other than the hospital. I spent five weeks in a coma. I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t talk,” he explained.
For someone whose livelihood revolved around communication, movement, and performance, the loss hit deeply. “It was emotional. I cried. I’m not ashamed to say I cried,” he said.
In the midst of recovery, familiar faces from the ANTM world showed up. Fellow judges Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker visited him in the hospital — a gesture that clearly meant more than words.
Nigel recalled, “I don’t know if he wanted me to see him in that way, but I was going to see him. That was such a terrible shock and really upsetting and horrifying and scary.”
Jay added, “I could feel how upset he was, for sure. I can’t even imagine where he was in his mind.”
Miss J reflected on that time with quiet honesty: “I thought back to when we used to do shows together. I just missed them so much.”
Notably absent from his bedside, however, was Tyra Banks. According to Miss J, she has yet to visit.
“She sent me a text that she wants to come and visit me, but no. Not yet.”
Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model pulls back the curtain on the cultural juggernaut that shaped early-2000s television. It revisits the glam, the chaos, and the controversies — but Miss J’s segment adds something else entirely: humanity.
The man who once critiqued runway walks with razor-sharp precision is now relearning how to take his own steps.
