Ariel Winter is getting real about the darker side of growing up in the spotlight.
The 27-year-old actress, best known for her role as Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, is opening up about the trauma she endured as a child star—and how it continues to affect her today. Speaking to DailyMail.com, she revealed that her early introduction to Hollywood exposed her to deeply unsettling experiences.
“I am familiar with male predators because I worked in Hollywood at a young age,” Ariel said. “I don’t wanna say too much about it, but by the time I was on a laptop and cell phone, I was getting inappropriate messages from older men, and it caused trauma.”
Ariel began acting at just 4 years old. As she gained fame, especially through her role on Modern Family, she says she also found herself dealing with unwanted attention and harassment, both in person and online. She eventually sought therapy to help her process the trauma she endured.
“The experiences I had in person and online as a child have affected me so deeply that I’ve had to go to therapy for it. The movie and TV industry is a dark place,” she shared.
Today, Ariel is using her platform to fight back. She’s now working with the YouTube true crime series SOSA Undercover, which conducts sting operations to expose and catch child predators. Her involvement with the series is personal and deeply driven by her own past.
“I was just like, God, I would love to be able to help be a part of that,” she said. “I don’t want to say there’s a solution, but I would love to help take some of these people off the streets.”
Though Ariel has remained relatively private in recent years, her latest interview reveals just how committed she is to making the industry safer for young actors. It’s a mission rooted in pain—but also in resilience.
