Aubrey Plaza is revisiting a moment from her past that nearly resulted in an unexpected Las Vegas wedding—with Michael Cera.

Appearing on the SmartLess podcast alongside hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Plaza detailed a story from the period when she and Cera were in a relationship, including a spontaneous plan that ultimately did not materialize.

The two actors, who dated for approximately 18 months while working on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, had embarked on a cross-country trip together at the time.

According to Plaza, the idea emerged during that trip.

She said they were driving across the country while “eating a bag of edibles” and planned to go to Las Vegas to “get married and then get divorced right away.”

The reasoning behind the plan was intentionally unconventional.

“So we could call each other our ex-wife and ex-husband forever because we thought that would be a really good bit.”

Despite the initial commitment to the idea, the plan ultimately did not move forward.

Plaza cited multiple factors, including their state of mind and the level of attention surrounding Cera at the time.

She explained that they were “too high and paranoid,” and noted that Cera’s visibility—particularly during the peak of his Superbad era and subsequent projects like Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist—made the situation more complicated.

“He was so recognizable,” Plaza said.

She also described a moment that contributed to their decision to abandon the plan.

“I feel like we got in line at the county office or something and everyone started running, and we ran.”

“I’m pretty sure that’s how it went down. Yeah, we bailed.”

The story adds context to a previously shared anecdote from Cera, who had spoken about the near-marriage in a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, describing how they “almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married.”

Despite the unconventional nature of the plan, Plaza confirmed that the two remain on good terms.

She stated that they are still very good friends today.
