Aziz Ansari is once again addressing the 2018 sexual misconduct allegations that briefly derailed his career.

The 42-year-old comedian and actor was accused anonymously of ignoring non-verbal cues during an encounter, prompting a broader cultural discussion about consent at the height of the #MeToo movement. At the time, Ansari released a brief statement. A year later, he elaborated, saying the experience left him “upset, humiliated and embarrassed.” He added, “It made me think about a lot, and I hope I’ve become a better person.”

Now, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Good Fortune star reflected on how he handled the moment and the criticism that followed. Some critics had argued he failed to address the woman directly in his 2019 stand-up special. Ansari, however, told the outlet, “I mean, I apologized to the person personally, right? When it happened.”

He also clarified that he did not take a career break, despite perceptions otherwise. “It wasn’t really a break, per se,” he explained. “I did that tour, and I wanted to address it in the special because people were curious about how I felt about the whole experience. So I felt like I had to talk about it in the special.”

Since then, Ansari has returned to work both on stage and behind the camera. In 2022, he began production on his directorial debut, Being Mortal, but the project was halted after allegations of inappropriate behavior against actor Bill Murray. The shutdown eventually paved the way for Good Fortune, a project Ansari not only stars in but also wrote and directed.

Ansari recalled how friends rallied around him during that difficult time. “Everybody’s texting me, ‘Oh, Aziz, I’m so sorry,’” he said. “And I said, ‘Oh God, I can’t live in this woe-is-me moment.’”

He credited Seth Rogen with helping him move forward. “And so I called Seth,” he shared. “I said, ‘Hey, I know you’re supposed to be filming Being Mortal, so you’re free today. This is a shitty day for me. If you want to help me, read this, tell me if you want to do it.’” Two hours later, Rogen called back and signed on.

Ansari’s willingness to discuss the allegations years later reflects both the lingering impact of the controversy and his effort to move past it. While his career has faced turbulence, his latest projects show he remains committed to telling stories—even in the wake of personal challenges.
