Awards season is officially in full swing, and the 2026 BAFTA Film Award nominations have arrived — bringing prestige, surprise, and a few pointed omissions along with them.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts unveiled this year’s nominees with the help of presenters Aimee Lou Wood and David Johnson, and while the list includes plenty of familiar awards-season favorites, it also charts its own distinctly British path.
Leading the nominations are One Battle After Another and Sinners, both of which made strong showings across major categories. But what’s generating the most conversation isn’t just who made the cut — it’s who didn’t.
Several actors notably recognized by BAFTA were previously overlooked by the Oscars, including Chase Infiniti for Leading Actress in OBAA, Odessa A’Zion for Supporting Actress in Marty Supreme, and Paul Mescal for Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Shakespeare in Hamnet.
The nominations also reflect BAFTA’s ongoing commitment to spotlighting British cinema. Films like I Swear, The Ballad of Wallis Island, and Pillion received multiple nods, reinforcing the ceremony’s role as both a global tastemaker and a champion of homegrown talent.
Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good found itself shut out of the major acting and film categories — though it did receive nominations for Costumes and Hair & Makeup, where its visual spectacle remains undeniable.
As one of the most important Oscars precursors, the BAFTAs often provide clues about momentum, shifting narratives, and industry priorities — but they’re also refreshingly unafraid to zig where Hollywood zags.
The ceremony will air on February 22, hosted by Alan Cumming, whose return promises a night that’s as charming as it is sharp.
If nothing else, this year’s nominations reaffirm one thing: awards season is never boring when Britain’s in the mix.
