In a historical cross-generational moment for Texas music, Beyoncé has officially joined forces with the late Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla. Dropping as the centerpiece of the newly released B’DAY (20th Anniversary Edition), the track—titled “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)”—weaves Beyoncé’s iconic 2006 Spanish-language hit alongside Selena’s timeless 1992 masterpiece.
The expanded anniversary project serves as “a celebratory offering of Spanish language songs that speak to Beyoncé‘s love and admiration for the culture and the incredible artists who contributed and continue to build on the genre,” according to an official statement from Parkwood Entertainment.
Because Selena’s family and estate hold her musical legacy close, approvals for posthumous collaborations are exceptionally rare. However, the connection between the two Houston-born powerhouses provided a unique bridge. Parkwood Entertainment released a statement detailing the significance of the clearance:
“Irreemplazable (Como La Flor) featuring Selena” is a momentous inclusion. Selena was one of the most celebrated Mexican American entertainers and was known as the “Queen of Tejano Music.” Since her passing in 1995, her estate rarely grants use of her music. This resounding approval for Beyoncé from Selena Quintanilla’s estate made it possible for this timely and meaningful duet. Two women from Texas. Two unmistakable and irreplaceable voices that broke down and continues to break down barriers.
The artistic lineage runs deep. Long before her own global superstardom took flight, a young Beyoncé revered Selena, listening to her records on Houston radio stations throughout her formative years. That early inspiration directly catalyzed Beyoncé’s decision to record her original Irreemplazable Spanish EP back in 2007.
By pairing the classic cumbia rhythms of “Como La Flor” with the empowering brass and kiss-off lyrics of “Irreemplazable,” the new duet bridges decades of Latin and pop history. B’DAY (20th Anniversary Edition) is available across all major streaming platforms.
