Charlie Heaton is giving fans a rare, intimate look into a huge part of his life — one that many people don’t even know about. Long before audiences knew him as Jonathan Byers on Stranger Things, Heaton was navigating fatherhood at just 20 years old. Now 31, he’s reflecting on the experience in a way that’s thoughtful, honest, and surprisingly emotional.
Charlie shares his now 11-year-old son with musician Akiko Matsuura, his former bandmate from their Comanechi days. The two welcomed their child before Charlie’s acting career took off, at a time when he was still figuring out adulthood himself.
In a new interview with Wonderland, Charlie opened up about the impact of becoming a young parent — especially while trying to build a creative career.
“Being a young father, you have to grow up very fast. You have to also learn ethical priorities, too, and you’ve got to look after somebody. That’s a big thing. You want to give them good experiences and a lot of love and the hard part obviously is distance. But that’s part of the sacrifice,” he said.
It’s a candid acknowledgment of the complexities young parents face — the push and pull of ambition, responsibility, and the desire to be present. While Charlie is notoriously private about his son, the way he speaks about fatherhood is marked by a quiet sincerity.
In the same interview, he spoke about another major part of his life: his nearly decade-long relationship with Stranger Things co-star Natalia Dyer. The pair have kept their romance relatively low-key over the years, avoiding the spotlight despite intense fan interest, but Charlie lit up when describing what it’s like to share both work and life with someone who understands him so deeply.
“It’s been a gift to work with my best friend,” he said. “To be able to have a shared experience with your partner about the anxiety when you don’t get a job – I know what that feels like, she knows what that feels like. You can be there to talk about it, or when you have a shit day at work, or come away from a scene and you didn’t think it worked. To be able to both understand each other on that level is great.”
