The cause of death for former child star Daveigh Chase has been officially confirmed following her death earlier this month at the age of 35.
The actress, who became a household name through a series of unforgettable performances in both live-action films and beloved animated classics, passed away after being hospitalized. News of her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans who grew up watching her work, particularly her iconic performances in The Ring, Lilo & Stitch, and Spirited Away.
Now, newly released records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner have provided additional information surrounding her passing.
According to the official findings, obtained by Us Weekly, Chase died from “acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) with other significant conditions included chronic polysubstance use.”
Medical experts define polysubstance use as the use of more than one substance in a pattern that negatively affects a person’s health and overall quality of life.
The medical examiner’s report brings clarity following weeks of speculation after news of Chase’s death first emerged.
Throughout her career, Chase built an impressive résumé that few actors achieve at such a young age.
Many audiences first came to know her as the haunting Samara Morgan in the American remake of The Ring, one of the defining horror films of the early 2000s. Her chilling performance helped turn the supernatural thriller into a cultural phenomenon and introduced moviegoers to one of horror’s most memorable modern villains.
At the same time, Chase showcased an entirely different side of her talent through voice acting.
She voiced Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, bringing warmth, humour, and emotional depth to one of the studio’s most beloved animated heroines. The role earned widespread praise and introduced her voice to an entirely new generation of viewers.
Her performance received additional recognition when she won a Young Artist Award for her work on the film.
Animation fans also remember Chase as the English-language voice of Chihiro in Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award-winning masterpiece Spirited Away. Her performance helped bring Hayao Miyazaki’s acclaimed fantasy film to English-speaking audiences and remains one of the most celebrated dubbed performances in modern animation.
She later appeared as Samantha Darko in Donnie Darko, continuing to build a career that balanced major studio productions with cult favourites.
News of Chase’s death sparked sadness across social media, with fans reflecting on the lasting impact of the characters she brought to life during the early years of her career.
In the days following her passing, additional headlines emerged after Chase’s former manager released a lengthy public statement.
According to reports, the statement included several allegations directed at the man who identified himself as Chase’s boyfriend following her death. Those claims quickly became part of the public conversation, although they remain separate from the official findings released by the medical examiner.
The medical examiner’s report now provides the most authoritative account regarding the circumstances surrounding Chase’s passing.
While her later years were largely spent outside the spotlight, Chase’s performances continue to resonate with audiences more than two decades after many of them first premiered.
As the entertainment industry continues to reflect on her legacy, Chase is being remembered not only for the memorable characters she portrayed but also for the lasting impression those performances left on audiences around the world.
Our thoughts remain with Daveigh Chase’s family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time.
