Eric Dane, the actor whose charm, vulnerability, and undeniable screen presence made Dr. Mark Sloan one of television’s most unforgettable heartthrobs, has died at 53.

Dane passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19, his family confirmed. His death comes ten months after he publicly shared that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

For many, Dane will always be McSteamy. He joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 during its second season, initially as a guest star. His debut episode, “Yesterday,” aired on Feb. 19, 2006 — exactly 20 years to the day of his passing. What began as a short arc quickly expanded after fans embraced Mark Sloan’s charisma and complexity.

Dane later reflected on the impact of that character. “It just kind of made sense,” he told Glamour in 2019 about leaning into the character’s sensual vibes in real life. “I felt like I had an artistic obligation to not shy away from that part of the character. And to a degree, there’s a lot of me in that guy. But I think at the end of the day, you tend to give people what they’re asking for, because it’s the path of least resistance.”

Still, he was honest about wanting more range. “I love that character; I just didn’t want to play that guy for the rest of my life,” he said. “It’s counterintuitive to what any actor wants to do with their career.”

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane’s early life was marked by tragedy. His father died from a gunshot wound when he was just seven years old. “He was a Navy man and ended up becoming an architect and interior designer. He was a troubled soul,” Dane told Gulf Times in 2014. As an adult and father himself, he later reflected on how deeply that loss shaped him.

Acting wasn’t part of his original plan. “I was a water polo player in high school and my season was short, and I ended up getting roped into playing Joe Keller in All My Sons. Dead serious. And I fell in love with it. I was, like, this is the greatest feeling ever!” he said.

After moving to Los Angeles with “40 bucks in my pocket,” as he told PEOPLE in 2014, he admitted, “I ended up partying for the next eight years. I got into a lot of trouble.”

He found early work in television, appearing in Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, and Married… with Children, before landing recurring roles in Gideon’s Crossing and Charmed. Film credits followed, including Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

After leaving Grey’s in 2012, he later clarified the departure. “I didn’t leave so much as I think I was let go,” he said on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast in 2024. Acknowledging personal struggles at the time, he added, “I wasn’t the same guy they had hired, so I had understood when I was let go, and [show creator] Shonda [Rhimes] was really great.”

He later found renewed creative freedom in HBO’s Euphoria. Speaking to Men’s Health in 2022 about his role as Cal Jacobs, he said, “It’s been freeing for me to play this role… There’s a lot asked of me in this role, and the expectations are high. It’s incumbent on me to hit every note because Cal lives such a fragile kind of existence. This guy teeters on what is morally acceptable and what is legally acceptable. So it’s important that I hit all the notes because otherwise he can so easily be misunderstood. There’s a humanity to this character that I hope comes out.”

Dane is survived by his daughters, Billie and Georgia.
