Hayden Panettiere is stepping into a new chapter of honesty — and doing it entirely on her own terms.

The 36-year-old actress, best known for her work in Nashville and Heroes, is opening up publicly about her sexuality for the first time while promoting her upcoming memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which is set for release on May 12.

In a candid new interview with Us Weekly, Hayden revealed that she identifies as bisexual, explaining that fear, pressure, and public scrutiny kept her from speaking openly about it for years.

“That’s something about me I was never able to share with the world, because it was just never the right time. It was either I was too young, and I was being forced to be perfect at all times. I was not encouraged to just be myself. Then came the period where it felt like people coming out, especially women, saying that they were bisexual or liked girls, was a fad. I was afraid that if I was honest, it was going to be like me jumping on the bandwagon. It was a very difficult topic to articulate properly. It’s sad I had to wait until I was 36 years old to share that part of me, but better late than never, right?”

The revelation marks one of Hayden’s most personal interviews to date. Over the years, the actress has spoken publicly about addiction, postpartum depression, trauma, and the challenges of growing up in Hollywood. But this, she says, was a part of herself she kept guarded — not because it wasn’t real, but because she never felt safe enough to fully claim it publicly.

When asked directly whether she had dated women before, Hayden confirmed that she had.

“Yeah, I did. It was scary, though, because there were paparazzi always waiting for me outside, to follow me everywhere. I had very little privacy. I have dated women. I was much more into women even as a child than I was men. I have explored it, but because I hadn’t shared this with anybody, I didn’t really have the courage to throw myself fully emotionally into it. Because then if I did fall in love, that wasn’t something that I wanted to ever have to hide.”

Her comments paint a picture of someone navigating identity while simultaneously living under the microscope of fame. Hayden became a household name at a young age, and much of her adult life unfolded in front of tabloids and paparazzi cameras. The pressure to maintain a polished public image, especially during the height of 2000s celebrity culture, clearly shaped how comfortable she felt expressing herself.

Still, she says she’s finally reached a place where she no longer wants to hold that part of herself back.

“Now that I know that this book is coming out, and that I’ve chosen to share it with the world, I’m comfortable to confidently say that yes, I am bisexual. I said it! This is the first time I got to say it out loud.”

The moment feels especially significant given the larger conversation happening in entertainment around authenticity, identity, and the pressures placed on young women in the spotlight. Hayden’s story reflects how much Hollywood — and public conversations around sexuality — have evolved over the past two decades.

Before this revelation, Hayden had been publicly linked to several high-profile relationships, including former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, actor Milo Ventimiglia, Steven Colletti, and Brian Hickerson.

Her memoir is expected to dive deeper into many of the experiences that shaped her life both on and off screen. And if this interview is any indication, Hayden is entering this era with a level of openness fans haven’t seen before.

For longtime supporters who grew up watching her career unfold, the actress’ latest revelation feels less like a headline grab and more like a long-overdue moment of personal freedom.
