Hayden Panettiere is opening up about one of the most traumatic experiences of her life.

During an appearance on the May 11 episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, the Nashville and Heroes actress spoke candidly about a disturbing situation she experienced when she was just 18 years old. The conversation came as Panettiere discussed her upcoming memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which is set for release on May 19.

While speaking with Shetty, Panettiere revisited an incident that took place aboard a boat after being invited out by someone she deeply trusted at the time.

“You write about a moment in your career where a friend of yours takes you onto a boat,” Jay said. “You’re led to a room which has an older man in it and then basically told to perform sexual acts.”

Panettiere explained that, at 18, she believed she was mature enough to navigate adult situations safely. Looking back now, however, she sees how vulnerable she actually was.

“The fact that I was 18, even though I’d lived such a huge life and I thought I was oh so mature at 18 … scientifically, your frontal lobes don’t develop until we’re what, 25, 26?” Hayden explained. “So even though I felt like I could make healthy decisions, safe decisions, I wasn’t capable of being fully aware of what was going on around me.”

The actress said her understanding of the situation changed almost instantly once she realized she was in danger.

“She went on to say that her ‘perspective completely shifted’ once she realized she was ‘in danger,’ but by then, she was ‘quite literally out to sea.’”

Panettiere described the experience as both “shocking” and deeply disorienting because nothing leading up to that moment suggested anything inappropriate was about to happen.

“There was no hints of anything like that happening,” she recalled. “So it took me by surprise.”

What made the experience even more painful, she said, was that the situation involved someone she trusted completely.

“It was led by somebody that I had grown to trust and see as a protector and somebody who had my back,” Hayden shared.

The actress then detailed being escorted into a small room below deck, where she suddenly found herself placed in bed beside a man she described as both “undressed” and “very famous.”

“She physically put me in the bed next to this undressed man who was very famous,” Hayden continued, adding that the man appeared to behave “like this was just an average day for him.”

Panettiere said instinct immediately kicked in.

“That lion in me, that fire in me … my hair stood on end and I became ferocious. I was like, ‘This is not happening.’”

She fled the room and attempted to find somewhere else to hide on the boat, though she quickly realized there were very few options available to her in the situation.

“There was no jumping off and swimming away,” Hayden explained. “And there was nobody who was going to be empathetic to my situation. I realized that this was nothing new to them.”

Throughout the interview, Panettiere repeatedly returned to the emotional aftermath of betrayal and misplaced trust. For her, the most lasting damage wasn’t just fear — it was the realization that someone she depended on had knowingly placed her in harm’s way.

“When you really find somebody that you trust, you hold on to them for dear life and you feel so lucky,” she said. “So to be betrayed like that is just an awful feeling.”

Panettiere has spent the past several years speaking more openly about addiction, trauma, postpartum depression, and the pressures of growing up in Hollywood. Her upcoming memoir appears to continue that pattern of honesty, with the actress revisiting painful chapters of her life in greater detail than ever before.

For many former child stars, conversations around fame often focus on career milestones and public success. Panettiere’s interview offered a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities young actors can face behind the scenes — especially when navigating adult spaces before they are emotionally equipped to fully understand them.

This Is Me: A Reckoning is currently available for pre-order ahead of its May 19 release.
