Taylor Swift’s move from the recording studio to the director’s chair has been years in the making — but that doesn’t mean she’s handing over the pen.

Ever since Searchlight Pictures announced in 2022 that Swift would be making her feature film directorial debut with a screenplay she wrote herself, fans have been eager for updates. Recently, rumors began circulating that acclaimed screenwriter Alice Birch had joined the project.

Not so fast. A source close to the production told E! News that the whispers are “not true” — Swift remains the sole screenwriter on the film.

Beyond that confirmation, the project is still shrouded in secrecy. Searchlight Presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield offered only high praise when the collaboration was first announced. “Taylor is a once in a generation artist and storyteller,” they said in a 2022 press release. “It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey.”

While this will be Swift’s first full-length feature film, her creative résumé already includes plenty of on-screen and behind-the-camera experience. She’s acted in films such as Valentine’s Day and The Giver, and she’s been at the helm of several of her own music videos.

Her most notable directorial work to date came in 2021 with All Too Well: The Short Film, a 15-minute visual companion to her fan-favorite song. Starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, the film told the emotional story of a relationship’s unraveling — one widely believed to be inspired by Swift’s past with Jake Gyllenhaal.

The short film became a cultural moment, earning praise for its storytelling, cinematography, and performances. It also solidified Swift’s growing reputation as a filmmaker with a clear vision and strong narrative instincts.

For now, there’s no word on casting, plot details, or a release date for her upcoming feature. But one thing is certain: the story will be entirely her own, from the first page to the final cut.

Swift has built her career on personal, emotionally resonant storytelling, and it seems her approach to filmmaking will be no different. While fans may be eager for spoilers, the secrecy only fuels anticipation — and if history is any indicator, she’s likely crafting something that blends heart, artistry, and meticulous attention to detail.
