Singer-songwriter James Blunt is weighing in on viral social media commentary speculating that he was involved in an unconsensual encounter referenced in the late actress Hayden Panettiere’s memoir.
The online debate traces back to Panettiere’s book released earlier this year, in which she detailed an uncomfortable experience during a yacht trip while she was 18 years old. In the memoir, she describes being placed into a bed alongside an unnamed, unclothed “famous thirtysomething British singer-songwriter.” Internet sleuths quickly pointed to Blunt, referencing a 2009 party column written by journalist Dean Piper detailing their presence at the amfAR charity event in Cannes.
Addressing the online storm, Piper published a thorough defense of the 52-year-old musician on his Substack column, titled WTF with Dean Piper. In the piece, Piper clarified the timeline and context of his original report:
“In 2009, in my capacity as a showbiz columnist, I wrote an article about Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt at the amfAR charity event in Cannes. They’d arrived together, had been flirty throughout and had gone to the afterparty together. They were photographed on a boat the next day, smiling and having fun.”
Piper went on to criticize the wild speculation circulating on social media:
“But from here we’ve seen an internet storm – which involves THOUSANDS of comments and DMs on Blunt’s social media accounts – concluding that James was the man in the cabin, and that he was not only in on it, but he is a human trafficker, devil-worshipper, paedophile, rapist, and – you guessed it – murderer. Guys, it only takes the smallest of AI searches to find out that in May 2009, when the pictures of Blunt and Panettiere were taken, she was 19, almost 20. So, if the incident happened when she was 18, Blunt’s not your guy to start with.”
Acknowledging the column and the surrounding internet chatter, Blunt shared a link to Piper’s Substack article directly to his social channels, captioning it simply with a side-eye emoji.
