James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, has passed away at the age of 48 following a courageous battle with colorectal cancer.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his wife, Kimberly, in an emotional Instagram statement shared on February 11.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Van Der Beek publicly revealed in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer the year prior. In the months that followed, he remained open with fans about his health journey, often speaking about resilience, gratitude, and the strength he discovered within himself.
In December 2025, he shared an encouraging update during an appearance on the Today show.
“I feel much, much better than I did a couple months ago.”
“It’s been a longer journey than I ever thought it would be. It’s required more of me — more patience, more discipline, more strength than I knew I had. I knew I was strong. I didn’t know I was this strong. But I feel good.”
Fans had grown concerned in September 2025 when he missed a Dawson’s Creek reunion and cancer benefit event, citing stomach viruses at the time.
Following his passing, friends of the family established a GoFundMe campaign to support Kimberly and their six children: daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emilia and Gwendolyn, and sons Joshua and Jeremiah.
The fundraiser reads:
“James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children. Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.”
“in the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”
“Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education. Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them,” the GoFundMe concludes.
At the time of publication, the fundraiser has raised over $1.3 million, with support reportedly including celebrity donations such as recurring contributions from Zoe Saldana.
During his illness, Van Der Beek remained proactive. In November 2024, he sold autographed Varsity Blues jerseys to help cover treatment costs. In 2025, he auctioned off Dawson’s Creek memorabilia for the same purpose.
Beyond television, Van Der Beek built a career that spanned film, stage, and advocacy. To fans, he was a teen drama icon. To those closest to him, he was a devoted father and husband who faced his final chapter with extraordinary courage.
Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones.
