Panem purists, brace yourselves: the original star-crossed lovers of District 12 are officially stepping back into the arena. In a revelation that sent seismic waves through global fandoms, Jennifer Lawrence confirmed that she and Josh Hutcherson are reprising their iconic roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the highly anticipated film adaptation of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Appearing on the October 28 episode of Alex Cooper’s wildly popular Call Her Daddy podcast, the 36-year-old Oscar winner opened up about stepping back into the franchise’s orbit alongside her long-time screen partner and former crew. For Lawrence, returning to the world that launched her to global superstardom felt less like a studio shoot and more like a deeply sentimental family reunion.

“It was unbelievable,” Lawrence shared during the broadcast. “It was so crazy because it was the same crew. It was the same camera guys, the same AD [assistant director] who I’ve worked with a million times too ’cause I love him, and Josh [Hutcherson] and Woody [Harrelson], and it was so emotional.”

The physical and emotional closeness between Lawrence and Hutcherson—whose electric on-screen chemistry anchored the original four-film saga between 2012 and 2015—remains completely untouched by time.

“Josh and I didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other,” she revealed. “It was so beautiful.”

Adding to the nostalgic magic, Woody Harrelson is officially slipping back into the worn boots of Katniss and Peeta’s legendary mentor, Haymitch Abernathy. In true Harrelson fashion, his off-camera antics haven’t changed a bit in the decade since The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

“And Woody obviously came through the window of my hotel room uninvited ’cause it wouldn’t be the same if he listened to boundaries or used a door,” Lawrence joked with her trademark dry wit.

Based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling prequel novel, Sunrise on the Reaping transports audiences back 24 years before the events of the original trilogy. The narrative centers on a young Haymitch Abernathy—portrayed across the main arc by rising talent Joseph Zada—as he navigates the brutal arena of the 50th Hunger Games, historically known as the Second Quarter Quell, where double the number of tributes were forced to fight.

While Zada carries the weight of Haymitch’s harrowing origin story, framing sequences featuring Harrelson, Lawrence, and Hutcherson ground the narrative in the original trilogy’s beloved emotional core. Following 2023’s box-office hit The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, this second prequel chapter promises a rich, layered return to Panem when it hits theaters nationwide on November 20.
