Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark may not be returning exactly as we remember them, but their real-life counterparts certainly are. In a major announcement that sent Hunger Games fans into full meltdown mode, it’s been confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are officially returning to the franchise for the upcoming prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
The news marks a long-awaited reunion for the beloved duo and director Francis Lawrence, who previously helmed the first four of the franchise films. While Lionsgate has not yet responded to press inquiries about the casting, the excitement is already sky-high — even though the actors’ exact roles remain a mystery.
“Sunrise on the Reaping” takes place 24 years before the original films, following the events of the Second Quarter Quell — the devastating Games that ultimately set the stage for Panem’s future rebellion. Since the prequel predates the existence of Katniss and Peeta, the nature of Jennifer and Josh’s involvement is still unclear. Will they appear as narrators? As new characters? In framing scenes set in the future? The studio is staying quiet for now, but fans are buzzing with theories.
What’s certain is that their presence signals something big. Jennifer Lawrence, who became a global superstar through her fiercely human portrayal of Katniss, has not returned to the franchise since 2015’s Mockingjay – Part 2. Hutcherson, meanwhile, earned a massive fan following for his emotional depth as Peeta, and his return has sparked a wave of nostalgia across social media.
The film’s creative team remains largely consistent with the franchise’s most successful entries, with Francis Lawrence returning to direct — a move fans view as a reassuring sign of tonal continuity. Lionsgate has placed the project at the center of its 2026 slate, with a confirmed theatrical release date of November 20, 2026.
A new chapter of The Hunger Games is coming, and it’s bringing its most iconic stars with it.
