John Boyega knows how to keep a secret—and he just pulled off one of the biggest double-announcements in recent Hollywood history. During an intimately revealing profile chat with The Guardian, the 34-year-old Star Wars: The Force Awakens star casually let slip that he has been a married man for nearly two years, and that he and his wife are currently expecting their first baby together.
The reveal happened almost by accident when the interviewer noted a specific piece of jewelry on the actor’s left hand:
“Oh yeah, this is my wedding ring,” Boyega confirmed with a smile. “I’ve been married for coming up to two years now.”
He shared that the couple opted for an ultra-private, low-key ceremony, laughingly comparing their stealthy approach to historical folklore by noting he got married the same way Braveheart did.
When asked about the ring itself—which looked quite different from the prop jewelry he wore while filming the documentary Damilola: The Untold Story—Boyega offered a delightfully grounded backstory:
“Yeah, this is our very sentimental ring,” the actor explained. “This is the one we decided to pick up spontaneously because I just wanted the ring on my finger, so we went to Walmart to get this. It was a lovely trip to Walmart.”
While their initial exchange of vows was understated, Boyega isn’t ruling out a massive party down the line once their foundation is fully set:
“I would love to have a wedding celebration,” he revealed. “We both like the idea of celebrating something established, rather than celebrating the entry. And by then, we’ll have to shut Nigeria down!”
