Johnny Depp is stepping back into the spotlight — and into one of literature’s most infamous roles.
The 62-year-old actor has been cast as Ebenezer Scrooge in an upcoming gothic remake of A Christmas Carol, directed by acclaimed horror filmmaker Ti West and produced by Paramount Pictures. The film, titled Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, will offer a darker, more thrilling spin on the Charles Dickens classic.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is described as “a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, following one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present, and future and fight for a second chance.”
The project, written by Nathaniel Halpern, will also star Andrea Riseborough, with West bringing his signature eerie atmosphere to the timeless story. Known for his X, Pearl, and MaXXXine trilogy, West’s take is expected to dive deeper into the psychological and supernatural elements of Scrooge’s haunting transformation.
For Depp, this role marks a significant return to mainstream Hollywood. Once one of the industry’s most bankable stars, his career took a hit following highly publicized defamation trials with ex-wife Amber Heard. In 2020, Warner Bros. dropped him from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, and major studios largely distanced themselves.
In recent years, however, Depp has been gradually rebuilding his career, focusing on indie films and passion projects — and Ebenezer could be his biggest comeback yet. The role of Scrooge, a man forced to confront the darkness within, feels fitting for Depp — an actor long drawn to complex, morally grey characters.
The project also follows news that Depp is teaming up with another major filmmaker for a new graphic novel series, signaling a creative resurgence.
Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is set to hit theaters on November 13, 2026. And while there have been countless adaptations of Dickens’ classic tale, this one promises something new — a haunting, cinematic reflection on redemption, regret, and the ghosts that follow us all.
