As Julia Stiles prepares to swap silver screen choreography for the mirrorball trophy, she’s setting the record straight on a piece of early-2000s pop culture history. The 45-year-old actress, who is officially joining the cast for the upcoming season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, took to social media to dispel a long-standing myth about her background and her iconic performance in the 2001 classic Save the Last Dance.
Teaming up with her professional dance partner Ezra Sosa, Stiles participated in a viral TikTok trend designed to address common fan misconceptions. Standing alongside Sosa, Stiles cheekily clarified that, contrary to popular internet lore, she never attended the prestigious Juilliard School in real life—a detail frequently misattributed to her biography because it was the central plot point for her on-screen character, Sara Johnson, in the beloved teen drama.
More surprisingly for long-time fans of the film, Stiles and Sosa revealed that the most complex, high-flying choreography in Save the Last Dance wasn’t actually performed by Stiles herself. The duo confirmed that a skilled body double stepped in to handle the intricate hip-hop and ballet fusion sequences that defined the movie’s climactic audition scene. Stiles humorously admitted that she hasn’t engaged in formal dance training since wrapped production on the film over two decades ago, though both she and Sosa assured fans they are fully energised and “ready to SLAY ON DWTS.”
This isn’t the first time Stiles has been candid about the intense physical toll of making the movie. During a 2021 retrospective interview on NBC’s Today, the actress reflected on the rigorous preparation required to step into Sara’s ballet shoes as a non-dancer, detailing the grueling daily training regimen she endured prior to filming.
Stiles explained at the time that she had to work extraordinarily hard to get into condition and “catch up to the level that Sara — or, at least, look like I could catch up to — I could be at the level that Sara was supposed to be at.” That dedication paid off, turning the film into a box-office hit and a cultural touchstone for a generation. Now, with Sosa by her side and a fresh season of ballroom competition ahead, Stiles is bringing that same work ethic to the dance floor, proving it’s never too late to learn a few new moves!
