Kathy Griffin Makes Headlines For Holding Hands With 22-Year-Old Man — Then Reveals Viral Photo Was Just ‘Social Media Sociological Experiment’

Kathy Griffin knows exactly how to get the internet talking—and this time, she says that was the entire point.

The comedian sparked a frenzy after posting a photo of herself walking hand-in-hand with a 22-year-old man during a recent trip to New York City. Within hours, social media users were debating whether Griffin had quietly entered a new relationship with someone more than four decades younger than her.

As it turns out, the headline-making moment wasn’t a relationship reveal at all.

Instead, Griffin later explained that the now-viral photo was part of what she called a “social media sociological experiment,” designed to expose the very different reactions people have when an older woman is seen with a much younger man.

The original Instagram post certainly got people talking.

Alongside the photo, Griffin simply wrote:

“He’s 22. Have at it, internet.”

The mystery man quickly became the subject of online speculation after fans tried to figure out who he was and whether the pair were romantically involved.

According to reports, the man recently graduated and is focused on data analytics while pursuing a Ph.D. in NeuroIS. He also maintains a private Instagram account that Griffin follows.

The post immediately attracted thousands of comments.

Many Instagram users applauded Griffin, joked about the age difference or encouraged her to enjoy herself, while others questioned the relationship.

Watching the reactions unfold became part of the experiment.

Griffin couldn’t help but laugh at the responses, later jumping into the comments herself.

“I AM DYING AT THESE COMMENTS.”

Not long afterward, she revealed the truth behind the post.

“You Guys! Thanks to all those who participated in my social media sociological experiment! No, I’m not dating this 22-year-old. He was helping me with security during my trip to NYC. But… what if I were? The reactions were facinating.”

Griffin went on to explain that she noticed a sharp contrast between how people reacted on different social media platforms.

According to the comedian, Instagram users were generally supportive, playful and encouraging.

Threads, however, told a very different story.

She said many users there accused her of grooming, criticized the hypothetical relationship and described it as inappropriate for a 65-year-old woman to date someone so much younger.

That difference, Griffin argued, highlights a double standard that still exists in Hollywood and beyond.

She pointed out that much older male celebrities are frequently involved with significantly younger women, often without receiving nearly the same level of criticism.

For Griffin, the experiment wasn’t necessarily about convincing people she had a new boyfriend—it was about seeing how quickly assumptions would be made and how differently society responds depending on gender.

She eventually wrapped up the discussion with a reminder not to take everything online quite so seriously.

“Relax… just a little harmless fun with you guys with an IG post.”

The viral moment is just the latest chapter in what’s been an eventful few years for Griffin.

Back in May, she appeared to debut another relationship on Instagram after sharing a photo with a different man. That post has since been deleted, prompting speculation that the relationship may have ended.

Her personal life has seen significant changes in recent years.

Griffin began dating marketing executive Randy Bick in 2012. After separating in 2018, the couple reunited several months later before marrying on January 1, 2020.

Their marriage ultimately came to an end when Griffin filed for divorce in December 2023. The divorce was finalized in January 2025.

In the months that followed, Griffin spoke candidly about just how difficult that experience had been.

“My divorce took me out,” Kathy told People. “I’m not going to lie. Some people are like, ‘I was glad I got rid of them, and I’ve never felt better.’ I was down for the count. It was harder than cancer.”

The comparison carried particular weight because Griffin has publicly shared her own health journey.

In 2021, she was diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer and underwent surgery that removed half of her left lung. During the operation, an intubation tube permanently damaged one of her vocal cords, requiring additional surgery to restore her voice.

Her willingness to openly discuss both her health and her personal life has become a hallmark of Griffin’s career, and this latest social media stunt fits neatly into her long-standing style of mixing humor with pointed cultural commentary.

Whether people viewed the viral post as funny, provocative or simply unexpected, Griffin got exactly what she wanted: a conversation.

And if her “social media sociological experiment” proved anything, it’s that the internet still has plenty to say about celebrity relationships—especially when they’re not quite what they seem.
