Kelly Clarkson is revealing a surprising detail about her historic American Idol win.
More than two decades after becoming the very first champion of the singing competition, Clarkson says the prize she was promised didn’t exactly arrive the way viewers might have expected.
The singer opened up about the experience during a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, while speaking with The Traitors Season 4 winner Rob Rausch.
At one point in their conversation, Clarkson asked him about his prize winnings.
“So you’re, is it $220,800 richer now?” she asked.
Rausch responded with an unexpected answer.
“They still haven’t paid me,” he revealed.
That comment immediately struck a chord with Clarkson, who said she experienced something very similar after winning American Idol back in September 2002.
“This is…I relate to this so hardcore. Whenever I won, you probably weren’t even alive when I was on American Idol…but I literally was on the show and they were like ‘you win a million dollars.’ No you didn’t. They lied,” she said.
Clarkson explained that the “million-dollar prize” often mentioned on the show wasn’t exactly what it seemed.
“It was like a million dollars worth of investment in you. And then they said you get a car. And I needed it because my car was bashed in, and I couldn’t afford a deductible. And then…no! I did not get a car! And then Clay Aiken, who didn’t win the second season, got a car. And his mom! I remember Clay telling me that the second season. I was like ‘I’m gonna actually kick your a– right now.’”
Clarkson’s story adds a bit of behind-the-scenes context to one of the most famous reality TV wins in music history.
Her victory on American Idol launched a career that has spanned multiple Grammy Awards, chart-topping albums, sold-out tours, and now a successful daytime talk show.
While the prize itself may not have arrived exactly as advertised, Clarkson’s career quickly proved that the opportunity was still life-changing.
In the years since, she has remained one of the show’s most successful alumni and a major voice in pop music.
