Lizzo is setting the record straight after social media users accused her of speaking negatively about Taylor Swift — and she is making it very clear that she is not here for the narrative.
The singer and rapper recently returned to Twitter/X, and within days of jumping back into the fast-moving world of online conversations, she found herself responding directly to criticism from users who believed she had taken shots at the pop superstar.
Like many social media moments, the exchange began with numbers, comparisons, and fan commentary before quickly turning into something much bigger.
The conversation started after a user shared a post comparing streaming and sales figures involving Lizzo and Taylor Swift alongside Drake.
According to the post, Lizzo’s My Face Hurts from Smiling mixtape and Taylor’s The Life of a Showgirl album had reportedly combined for over four million streams and sales, while Drake’s three new albums had generated nearly 700,000.
Lizzo responded with a simple question.
She asked if someone could explain what the numbers meant.
But what started as confusion quickly shifted when another user replied with a claim that had little to do with statistics and everything to do with online assumptions.
“it means all that sh-t talking you did about Tay finally caught up to you”
Lizzo did not let the accusation sit unanswered.
Instead, she quote tweeted the comment and directly addressed the claim.
“Are you well? First of all I have never talked sh-t about Taylor Swift— also while we on the subject I’ve never talked sh-t about any artist. Just because I mention an artist by name does not mean I’m talking shit— grow tf up pls”
The response immediately gained attention online, with fans discussing the exchange and revisiting previous comments Lizzo has made about Taylor over the years.
Interestingly, those comments paint a very different picture than the one suggested by the criticism.
Lizzo has publicly praised Taylor before and even once compared herself to the singer while discussing songwriting and how both artists pull inspiration from personal experiences.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show in 2022, Lizzo joked:
“I’m Black Taylor Swift,” she joked on The Breakfast Club radio show in 2022. “I really am, I’m trifling.”
She then elaborated further on similarities she saw in the way both artists approach storytelling.
“I don’t talk too badly about [an ex’s] character, it’s just what he do,” Lizzo said. “I’ll be like, ‘He’s a good person, but this is what he did. Am I tripping?’ They’d be like, ‘You’re not tripping, you’re not tripping.”
