M.I.A. is doubling down after being removed from Kid Cudi’s Rebel Ragers Tour — and the fallout is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about controversies in music this week.

The “Paper Planes” artist made headlines over the weekend after comments she delivered onstage during her opening set sparked backlash from concertgoers and social media users alike. Audience footage from the show quickly spread online, eventually prompting Kid Cudi to publicly announce that M.I.A. would no longer be part of the tour.

During her set, M.I.A. reportedly told the crowd: “I’ve been canceled for many reasons. I never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter.”

She also said: “I can’t do ‘Illygirl,’ though some of you could be in the audience.”

The remarks were met with boos from portions of the crowd, and criticism escalated almost immediately online.

On Monday, Kid Cudi addressed the situation directly in a statement posted to Instagram.

“TOUR UPDATE: M.I.A is no longer on this tour. I told my management to send a notice to her team before we started tour that I didn’t want anything offensive at my shows, cuz I already knew what time it was, and I was assured things were understood. After the last couple shows, I’ve been flooded with messages from fans that were upset by her rants. This, to me, is very disappointing, and I wont have someone on my tour making offensive remarks that upsets my fanbase. Thank you for understanding. Rager.”

Not long after the statement went viral, M.I.A. responded across social media with a series of lengthy posts defending herself and accusing critics of misrepresenting her comments.

“I WROTE ‘ILLYGAL’ ON THE MAYA LP A SONG FROM 2010. I STARTED THIS INTRO TO THE SONG WITH THE STATEMENT SAYING I’M ILLYGAL, AND I SAID MY TEAM HASN’T GOTTEN VISAS YET. THEN PLAYED A SONG THAT HAD LYRICS SAYING ‘FU&% THE LAW,’ WHICH I STILL BELIEVE, IF THE LAW IS UNJUST F@%& IT,” she wrote.

“DO NOT GAS LIGHT MY WORDS. THAT IS THE WORK OF SATAN. I WROTE ‘BORDERS’ AND ‘ILLYGAL’ AND ‘PAPER PLANES’ BEFORE YOU THOUGHT IMMIGRANT RIGHTS WERE COOL. I’VE HAD THSES BATTLES BY MYSELF WITHOUT THE HELP OF MILLIONS OF FANS BACKING ME . I DON’T NEED THIS VIRTUE SIGNAL ERA TO ALL OF A SUDDEN ERASE AN ENTIRE LIFE I’VE LED.”

The artist then tied her response to her Christian faith, continuing:

“JESUS WAS AN IMMIGRANT AND A REBEL. I HAVE NO APPOLGY FOR THE JUDGEMENTAL THE WICKED AND THE IGNORENT, FOR THOSE ARE SPIRITS THAT WE MUST OVER COME IN OUR LIVES AND IN THIS WORLD. JESUS RETURNS TO LEAD THE WORLD JUSTLY BECAUSE THERE IS INJUSTICE IN THIS WORLD . IM PROUD OF THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR IT EVERYDAY. GOD BLESS YOU. GO LISTEN TO M.I.7.”

Her comments sparked another wave of online debate, particularly after one fan replied: “And then you endorsed Donald Trump.”

M.I.A. responded directly.

“DON’T BE AN AGENT OF DIVISION, I CAN’T VOTE IN THE US, AND 48% OF LATIN COMMUNITY VOTED TRUMP. SO ARE YOU GOING TO HATE THEM ALL? WE MUST UNITE TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY, THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO LIVE IN A BETTER PLACE. IF YOU ARE EASYLY LED BY RUMOUR THEN YOU DON’T SEE THE LIGHT FOR YOURSELF. I PRAY FOR YOUR AWAKENING.”

The artist later reposted an older tweet from 2024, adding another lengthy reflection about politics, spirituality, and public reaction to her views.

“PEOPLE PRACTICE DIVINATION, READ TARRO CARDS GO TO WITCHES FORTUNE TELLERS LOOK AT STARS READ HOROSCOPES TALK TO THERAPISTS READ PALMS GO TO PSYCHICS WHO CLAM THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO SEE THE FUTURE, YET THEY CAN’T TAKE A TWEET FROM ME SUGGESTING COMMON SENSE PREDICTION THAT TRUMP WAS GONNA WIN.”

“MAYBE THAT’S MY ANOINTING. MY GIFT, MY TRUE ABILITY TO GUIDE YOU TO WHAT IS NEXT, THATS WHY AS AN ARTIST I GET COPIED, LIKE I’VE ALWAYS SAID WHAT WILL HAPPEN . ISNT IT TRUE THAT HE WON? WHERE IS THE LIE? I WOULD LIKE TO FIX MY PREVIOUS PERDITION THOUGH, I M GOING TO SWAP RFK WITH THOMAS MASSIE.”

She concluded the post by writing: “I am secure in Christ and I know how Satan operates.”

The controversy marks yet another polarizing chapter in M.I.A.’s career. Over the years, the artist has consistently sparked debate for her outspoken opinions, even as fans continue to credit her as one of the most influential alternative artists of the 2000s.

For Kid Cudi, the decision appears rooted in protecting the atmosphere of his live shows and maintaining trust with his audience. While reactions online remain divided, many fans praised the rapper for addressing the situation quickly and directly.

As of now, no replacement opener for the remaining Rebel Ragers Tour dates has been announced.
