Navigating a breakup is challenging under any circumstances, but doing so under the spotlight of a global hit television series requires a unique level of grace. In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline opened up about what it was really like to film romantic scenes alongside her co-star and ex-boyfriend, Chase Stokes, after their real-life split.

Cline, 28, and Stokes, 33, originally met on set during the filming of the show’s breakout first season. Their chemistry quickly translated off-screen, leading to a high-profile romance among fans. However, the pair parted ways during production of season two, all while their on-screen counterparts, Sarah Cameron and John B, remained central romantic partners in the drama.

Reflecting on those early days post-breakup, Cline admitted that stepping back into romantic character dynamics took real emotional effort:

“There were moments when it was difficult, absolutely. But once the dust kind of settled, we were able to just revert to the friendship that we always had. At some point, you look at each other and you’re like, ‘Are you ready to stop being miserable? Because I’m ready.’”

Her perspective echoes sentiments previously shared by Stokes, who praised their mutual commitment to preserving their professional dynamic for the sake of the story and their audience. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly during a previous press round, Stokes highlighted the pact they made early on:

“Mads and I have been working together now for 30 episodes, and we made a promise to each other before we even started dating that the work was always going to come first. And that no matter what happens in our personal lives, and the ways that life sometimes takes you in different directions, that we’re always going to honor the work. That stayed 100 percent truthful this season.”

By prioritizing their artistic partnership and mutual respect, Cline and Stokes managed to transition from former partners to supportive collaborators, ensuring that the magic of Outer Banks remained entirely unbroken for millions of viewers worldwide.
