Maren Morris has found a way to transform heartbreak—and a few bad dates—into music.
The 35-year-old country star opened up about how her post-divorce dating experiences directly inspired her new material. Speaking during a Soho Sessions performance on Monday (August 25), Maren admitted that not every date went smoothly.
“I started dating a little bit [after my divorce] and just met some f—ing bums that couldn’t pay the tab,” Maren told the crowd. “I brought to my cowriters this idea, and I was like, ‘I’ve been dating a few losers. I think it’s just a stroke of bad luck. It’s gonna end soon.’”
That honesty became the foundation for her new song “Too Good,” which appears on her freshly released Dreamsicle album. The track captures that mix of frustration and humor that often comes with modern dating.
Some of the lyrics reflect her independence, with lines like: “Bed feels bigger and that’s alright with me / Hope that you’re doing the same / And the couch that you’re on is okay.”
The “Middle” singer explained that even though the dates weren’t successful in a romantic sense, they ended up fueling her creativity. For Morris, that’s a reminder that inspiration doesn’t always come from fairy-tale endings. Sometimes, it’s the missteps that spark the best art.
Fans at the show applauded her openness and praised the raw, witty storytelling that has defined her songwriting since the start of her career.
