Matthew Fox Talks Acting Hiatus and Return

Matthew Fox is stepping back into the spotlight — but on his own terms.

The 59-year-old actor, best known for his iconic role as Jack Shephard on Lost, has kept a relatively low profile in Hollywood over the past decade. In fact, Fox has appeared in only a handful of projects in recent years, making his return to television with The Madison feel like a notable moment for longtime fans.

Now, Fox is ready to talk about why he stepped away from the industry — and why the timing finally felt right to come back.

Speaking with Variety at the New York City premiere of the upcoming Taylor Sheridan series, Fox reflected candidly on the personal decision that led him to pause his career. For him, it ultimately came down to family.

“I felt like it was time to engage really intensely with my family,” he told Variety at the NYC premiere of the new show. “I had missed some of their childhood because I was on set all the time with Lost and doing films and promoting everything. It was the right moment for me to step back and take a moment and engage with the people that I love and care about the most in the world, and I did that.”

Fox’s rise to fame during the 2000s was intense. After gaining attention on the teen drama Party of Five, he became a global television star with Lost, the massively successful ABC series that ran from 2004 to 2010. The show’s worldwide popularity meant constant filming, promotion, and media appearances — a pace that can easily consume years of an actor’s life.

For Fox, the realization eventually hit that time was moving quickly at home.

Rather than chasing every new role that came his way, he chose something many actors struggle to do: step away.

In the years that followed, Fox appeared only occasionally on screen. His most recent projects include the 2023 thriller Caught and the 2022 limited series Last Light. Outside of those appearances, he has largely stayed out of the public eye.

Still, that doesn’t mean the passion for storytelling ever disappeared.

“I kind of missed storytelling, and this opportunity came along from Taylor,” Matthew said. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m in.’”

The opportunity he’s referring to is The Madison, a new series created by prolific television producer Taylor Sheridan, the mind behind massive hits like Yellowstone and its expanding universe of spinoffs.

Sheridan’s projects have become known for their cinematic storytelling, strong character arcs, and sweeping Western drama — making them a major draw for actors looking for compelling material.

For Fox, the script was enough to bring him back.

While he has remained selective about his projects, The Madison offered a creative opportunity that felt worth returning for. And based on early anticipation, the show could quickly become one of the most talked-about series of the spring.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see Fox back in action, either.

The Madison will premiere its first three episodes on Saturday, March 14, with the next three episodes debuting the following week.
