The Devil Wears Prada 2 is already shaping up to reflect a different kind of fashion conversation—and according to Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway played a key role in that shift.
In a recent interview tied to Hathaway’s Harper’s Bazaar cover story, Streep opened up about filming the upcoming sequel and what stood out to her during production—particularly during scenes shot at Milan Fashion Week.
The highly anticipated follow-up, set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, sees Streep returning as the iconic Miranda Priestly, with Hathaway reprising her role as Andy Sachs. The sequel explores a changing publishing landscape, with Runway magazine facing new challenges in an evolving industry.
But beyond the storyline, it’s the behind-the-scenes decisions that are drawing attention.
While attending fashion shows for the film, Streep noted a detail that felt at odds with where the industry had been heading.
She said she was “struck by how not only beautiful and young—everyone seems young to me—but alarmingly thin the models were.… I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Annie clocked it too.”
According to Streep, Hathaway didn’t just notice—it led to action.
“and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She’s a stand-up girl.”
The moment speaks to a broader shift in how fashion is represented on screen, particularly in a film that helped define the cultural conversation around the industry nearly two decades ago.
The original Devil Wears Prada captured a specific era—one defined by exclusivity, pressure, and a narrow standard of beauty. The sequel, it seems, is navigating a different landscape, where those standards are being reexamined.
Filming in Milan added authenticity to that evolution, with Streep, Hathaway, and co-stars including Stanley Tucci and Simone Ashley appearing at real-world events like the Dolce & Gabbana show.
