Miley Cyrus is revisiting the role that changed her life — and she’s doing it with reflection, intention, and a live audience.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hannah Montana, Disney+ has announced a streaming special centered on Cyrus and the cultural legacy of the show that defined a generation. The project premieres March 24 and will feature Cyrus in conversation with Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper.

While early speculation hinted at a possible concert event tied to the anniversary, Disney+ has confirmed the celebration will instead take the form of an in-depth interview special. Filmed in front of a live studio audience, the event promises a candid conversation about the creation of Hannah Montana and the enduring impact of the character two decades later.

In its official announcement, Disney+ described the tone and structure of the special:

“The conversation will offer an intimate look at the creation of one of pop culture’s most iconic characters and the lasting impact the show and character have had on fans around the world. With heartfelt nostalgia and fresh perspective, Cyrus will revisit the moments, music and memories that defined an era.

Viewers will be treated to never-before-seen archival footage, while some of the most memorable sets from “Hannah Montana” are brought back to life — including the Stewart family living room and the legendary Hannah Montana closet. There will also be some familiar notes that find their way back into the spotlight…”

For longtime fans, those set recreations alone signal something meaningful. The Stewart family living room served as the emotional center of the series, while the Hannah Montana closet — that spinning wardrobe transformation space — became one of Disney Channel’s most recognizable visual signatures.

When Hannah Montana debuted in 2006, it reshaped the network’s programming model. The series didn’t just succeed as a television show; it became a cross-platform phenomenon. Soundtracks topped charts. Tours sold out arenas. Merchandise moved at record pace. And Miley Cyrus became a global name before she was out of her teens.

The series followed Miley Stewart, an ordinary high schooler secretly living as pop star Hannah Montana. That double-identity premise resonated widely, particularly with young viewers navigating their own growing pains. Over four seasons, the show cemented itself as a cornerstone of mid-2000s youth culture.

Now, 20 years later, Cyrus is reflecting on that chapter with gratitude.

In her official statement about the anniversary, she shared:

“Hannah Montana will always be a part of who I am. What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I’ll always be thankful for that connection. The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of. This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”

The phrasing makes it clear: this isn’t about revisiting a costume. It’s about acknowledging a legacy.

Two decades later, Hannah Montana continues to occupy a unique place in pop culture memory. Clips still circulate online. Songs remain playlist staples. And fans who once watched after school are now adults revisiting the show with a new lens.

On March 24, Disney+ will offer something more than a throwback. It’s positioning the special as a cultural check-in — a look back at how one character shaped not just a career, but a generation.

Twenty years in, the wig may be retired. But the impact is still very real.
